Would u game these TOUR ISSUE Nike Wedges??

LowAndLeft32

Recommended Posts

So I have these two tour issue Nike wedges that I put in play early this year. My understanding is the wedges were built for tour player Carl Peterson hence the CP stamps.

Specs are somewhat unknown since I purchased these second hand and the shafts have no stickers indicating make or model. My guess is the 59* might be the Mike Taylor grind???

Also, I’m not sure on how much use these wedges have seen. I played 12 rounds with them and practice with the about 10 times. Also to me the tour velvet cord grips seem to show some signs of use.

So two questions for the group:

1) how much life is left on these wedges?

2) would you game these wedges today?

THANKS.

For me, a wedge is only as good as its grooves.  To me, they sorta look decent (could use a really good scrubbing with a stiff wire brush to get rid of the dirt in the grooves).  The grips have got to be replaced as they look slick and shiny.

Thanks @cgasucks. I do need to clean them more often as I get lazy. Haha

Looks like the grips rubber is cracking, so they’d need to be replaced. But otherwise... yeah, I’d play them! Take them out on the course and and see if they work for you or not. You probably will be leaving a few hundred to a thousand RPM on the table compared to brand new major OEM wedges when hitting from poor lies or in wet conditions, less so from the fairway. But honestly, unless your consistently making great contact you probably won’t be able to take advantage of that extra spin anyways and in that situation you’ll learn how much roll you’re getting and adjust on the fly anyways. The reality is that most of us aren’t playing on rock hard greens rolling a 12+ to tucked pins on a regular basis and therefore don’t really need wedges that generate the absolute maximum amount of spin.

As for lifespan - that’s dependent on you. Raw wedges wear more quickly, but I’d think these easily have another 75 rounds w/ intermittent practice left. If you hammer away out of a practice bunker and beat a ton of rock hard range balls, you could pretty easily cut that in half. But these definitely are playable! I play all raw irons and wedges and would recommend a 500-1000 grit foam sanding block to strip away the rust. They’ll last longer if you keep the rust away and will become more stable if you let a patina develop overtime. Orange = bad, brown/grey = okay.

TL;DR - They’re junk, send them to me for proper disposal 🙂

Wow great insight @EDT501 I didn’t know about the sanding block. I will have to give they a go!

Worst case scenario is that you have them regrooved. You can also buy a groove sharpener. Still a lot of life left in those

Yeah this is what I was going to suggest.  Just get a groove sharpener and swing away.  Not really much value in them for resale likely and if you like them and play well with them, then keep them in the bag.

Having they been working ok? I'd game them if they were better or at least as good as other options for me. If they weren't i'd sell.

They look like backyard wedges. I’d prob use them on my chipping area and leave them outside.

I think I have had decent success using these. My best guess is out of rough and bunkers I’m losing some spin. But hard to judge. On inside launch monitor I’m getting about the same spin as other wedges.

Change the grips and use them, Carl is notorious for swapping gear all over place anyway😃

If it's that hard to tell they are probably fine to game if you feel inclined. absolutely. As others said just touch the grooves up and regrip.

I would play them. Carl was a good player but not like he was Tiger or won a major with those wedges.

This is funny, I just bought a pair of (not quite as old) Nike wedges to update my bag.

I could never afford the Nike gear when it was new, but left handed used gear can be had for cheap.

I got a Nike SV 55 and 60 for $22.

Clean and fresh grips, then rip it.

If a launch monitor is showing you're getting about the same spin, then you're getting the same spin. Don't overthink it just because the wedges are old.

I think the rust is making them appear more worn than they are. Sharpen the grooves, replace the grips with fresh ones, and keep playing. If these are performing well for you, then new wedges won't give you anything more other than being new.

Ive got a few of those Nike wedges which once belonged to a tour pro, note the grind on the 58 degree..  Never used them since the shafts are pretty stout for me but cool looking wedges never the less..!

yes.  Of course I’d use them.  Quick CLR bath will make them look new.

Good question

Good questions. My understanding is they are Miura forged. I have no idea what they are worth.

Not Miura forged, nor made by Hatori Hanzo😂, yet are a quality forging in all probability ground to player preference by Mike Taylor, so a bit better than urban legend stuff👍🏻
