What’s most important to you in an iron?

Recommended Posts

Believe it or not I’m wanting to find a set of irons to keep in the bag for a while. Ive come to the conclusion that with the right shaft basically any most head can work for me. I’m a decent ball striker who just doesn’t have time to play a lot. Really the only part of the head design i cant work around is a lot of offset. Ive had the 919T in my bag for a few months and they are good but the short irons just look funky to me. Ive also hit irons that feel better although I’m sure that’s more to do with the shaft. Ive got X100 TI in them so they are consistent but by no means “smooth”. Really the only reason to try something else is the look of the short irons. Would you swap just for that?

Also like a thinner top line and sole, though honestly at address I block everything out and just hit the club. My confidence comes looking at it/pulling it out of the bag. Less offset is nice but I have played irons with a greater amount. I don’t like chrome finish very much, chrome anything is just such an outdated ugly look.

i'm only an average golfer but I play small blades with extra weight in the bottom because they have a little offset plus I like the looks of a smaller head. I tried some one length pinhawks because they looked kind of small with little offset(3 mm) but they were still too big I hit them all over the face which affected my swing. Anything that I can use that forces me to control my swing helps my overall ball striking.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

An appealing look at address, forgiveness and feel.

Kind of a hard combo to find at times.

It’s interesting to me that although a lot of you have mentioned looks no one mentions head shape. I cant think of a set i have had where every club looked right to me. Usually its like my current bag and the heel gets to tall and round in the short clubs. This bugs me much more than i thicker top line.

That's an interesting observation. I am very picky about how my clubs look too, I don't like them too long nor more than 3 mm offset nor abrupt hosels nor the wedges too round. The current set I have now is cheap but honestly its probably the first set of irons that the whole set looks appealing in about 25 years of playing golf.

1.  Look behind the ball.  I demand relatively compact size, relatively little off-set and a relatively thin top line.   Others need not apply

2.  Turf interaction.  In and out smoothly.  Killed leading edge and significant camber ti the sole.

3. As much forgiveness as I can get with criteria 1 and 2.

4.  For me that adds up to T-100s bent weak one degree from 4 iron to nine iron and a Vokey pitching wedge.

In order of highest priority to least (but still required):

Proper distance/gapping (partly due to shafts)

Proper spin (partly due to shafts)

Proper turf interaction/sole grind

Great feel

Great looks

Acceptable forgiveness

As for my current gamers (P760's), they are perfect on gapping/spin, have the best turf interaction I've ever played, have the best feel I've ever played, are forgiving (for me) and I've warmed up to the looks (wasn't a huge fan when they were first released).

They've got to look good. I grew up with blades but a small cavity or hollow head might be ok. They have to feel good like they are forged metal or well damped cast steel. A thin top line and minimal offset. A straight edge and not too much bounce. Since I'm in the rough a bit they have got to be sharp at the leading edge to cut through the grass. Big Bertha's were ok on a tee or a mat or sitting up on Bermuda Grass but useless off tight lies or rough. Avoid clunky clumsy heads. I have tons of irons but fancy the new Mizuno blades.
