What’s most important to you in an iron?

Cost is always the main factor for me. Looks come second. Reputation third.

Ideally I want to find a compact, tech or CB, players iron between 3 -5 years old. Something that flew under the radar but has a sterling reputation. Hence, I've played Cleveland irons for most of my career.

I like cult irons, but can rarely afford them. I would love some AP2's (716 or 718 ideally), or some S55's, or some 745's, or some JPX 900 Tours, or some V6's, or some J15cb's - man so many clubs I could play. If only I made more money.

So, I may be playing my CG7 Tours until the day I die.

🤣😂 changes daily.... but seriously, looks followed by feel are probably my most important. I have a thing for cult irons but like jholz I'm a cheap-o so I scour for months trying to snag some that are undervalued. Currently gaming Miura retro blades that fit my needs perfectly....for now

Yes, @Yzmerf, I would and did just that.

In 2006 I bought and loved original X-forged Callaway.  But around 2017 they were a bit beat up, so it was time.  So, I bought 2-PW set of Taylormade Rsi TP irons.  They are nice looking heads, slightly stronger lofts, but with offset.  I had KBS Tour-V 110-S shafts installed so I had hopes.  My irons have always had minimal offset and weaker lofts.

What I was not expecting was how much the offset of each iron affected my focus style of play.  If I didn't stop and take the appropriate time to make sure my hands were position just so, BALL go left.  NO matter what I did, I couldn't get use to how they looked at address or direction the ball went if I didn't adjust to them.  The thing is when I play in a $$$ game or tournament, I am a total feel player, no thinking about much other than minor shot mechanics and shot plan.

I have always had the basic belief, irons must accommodate my mechanics and approach to golf; not the other way around.  They lasted around a year before I bought 716CB's which have specs that fit me to a T.  My 620 irons fit me to a T as well.

How the head looks in my eye is #1

How the head feels at impact #2 - must talk to me.

How the shaft behaves and does it allow the head to talk to me #3

If any of those are off, it will lead to change.  That said, I had no reason for buying 620 irons, just that I like them, however, the SteelFiber i110 "S" shafts in them, though fine, were not talking to me.  I switched them out for PX 5.5 and NOW I am a happy camper.

Consistent distance and trajectory so that user input can vary same as needed. For me, minimal to no offset, a sole/ leading edge that is “fast” through turf, and a shorter blade length allow me to do that.

Confidence. Which I get isn't measurable and is completely subjective, but I want to feel confident with the irons in my bag. Which usually, to me, manifests itself in high launch, forgiveness, solid feel, and a decent sound. More often than not I've gravitated towards more of a game improvement iron. Through the years this has almost caused me to look for a thicker topline and some offset

For me I want to be able to pick my iron to hit a number and feel confident that on a good swing ball will be pin high if on green or left/right. Ideally a one way miss too is preferred.

I've battled this for years and I've absolutely changed irons just based on the looks of the short irons... and that's why I've bought and sold so many sets of BeCu Ping Eye 2+'s, I just can't handle the looks of the 9-iron and PW, but I sure love playing the rest of them!
