I think i need a mallet finally

So i have a favorite putter. My custom blade putter will never leave my house. But apparently, after compelling my stats from the past 3 season, my best putting season was when i used my odyssey mallet (model that i dont remember, it has a slant neck).

i think i will put a mallet back in my bag for next season. I mostly interested in the spider tour x. Seems so many players use it. Can anyone comment on their transition from their blade putter to a mallet type?

and if anyone tried the my spider tour x, and did you like the service?

thanks

Trying a putter on the golf course is the only way to know whether you like it or not. Personally, I find mallet head styles hard to swing-square-at-impact than a smaller head head size.

I switched back to a mallet this season and might not look back anytime soon.  If your custom gamer that you've been playing with does not have an insert though, I would definitely try the spider out first, and any other putters with inserts as well.  I'm not an insert guy so I went and got a mallet without an insert, is nice.  But I would definitely determine if they are for you or not before buying.

I bought a cheap half mallet with an aluminum insert which is a copy of a classic style from Wilson or Dunlop(I had one which I never should of let go) from the 80's with a round grip and I have never putted so good. I think the problem with the square putters like my Anser is I get so concerned about squaring things up I forget to make a good swing. This thing is point and shoot and the insert makes a really nice soft click, which I prefer over the soft inserts.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

If your blade does not have a face insert or you don't consistently putt on fast greens (10-11 stump or faster) then you need to consider a mallet without a face insert.

I love....really love the stability of the spiders. But the inserts are so soft. I went back to a blade, no insert about 5 weeks ago and my putting improved simply because there's less stroke to get the ball the same distance as the spider. Too much hit needed or too big a swing needed to get the spider to the hole.

The swing/hit needed with face insert mallets counteracts some.of the forgiveness. For me, enough to make a blade a better putter.

Like many of us here, I love to buy and sell putters.  For me the majority have been Scotty Cameron because I liked how they looked.  I've had everything in the bag from the Classic 1 to 009's.  Then I got "tired" of Scotty and played around with more affordable putters like the Ping Redwood Anser.  I also went through a Byron Morgan phase and ended up with a DH89.

I'm still surprised by it, but I now I have a TaylorMade Spider Tour Black that's been in the bag for the last 2 seasons.  I never thought I'd game a mallet, especially one that looks like the Spider.  For me, the performance can't be denied.  My stoke has never been more smooth and I'm putting better than ever.

I switch between 2 putters a Ping JAS Anser and a Ping Nome TR (slight Arc). I tried the Spider for a couple rounds this summer and thought it was too soft, I had "hit" the ball with my putting stroke and I do not like to do that.  I mostly use the Nome because I like the stability but the Anser is always close by and is a great back up.  The only thing I would suggest is to try a mallet that is designed to have a little flow with it, it should help the transition.  Typically Scotty Camerons with the .5 designation have some, so do Ping with Slight Arc and most slant neck mallets

Spider X is great but it doesn't feel like a blade at all to me, even with the slant neck. The weight is way back. Great putter though.

If you want a mallet that has a blade like feel, check out the Bettinardi Innovai 6 or the new Spider FCG. Cleveland Frontline Elevado is another option too. What they all have in common is the weight is forward instead of hanging way off the back. Makes it easier to forward press and it does have a blade like feel if you get a toe hang neck.

I started with an odyssey 1 and now I’m swing an odyssey 3T and I’ll never look back.  Having a little larger head with some weight gives me the control I’m looking for when rolling on the green.  My

biggest issue with mallets is the shaft, has to be a double bent, the slant necks or straight shafts promote more rotation for me and I like a straight thru stroke.

Pick up a couple cheap odyssey’s on eBay and see what works best before spending big bucks on something you might not like.

I always thought a mallet would be good for me, but at one point I want to a sam lab and overwhelmingly a flanged blade produced the best role for me. I was not expecting that all, but I smithed to the style of putter and never looked back.

Can anyone compare the Spider X with the single bend (face balanced) to their blade putter? My wife bought me a Special select newport for my birthday, but I was not able to get fitted for it so it has not performed well so far (not her fault, she was trying to do something nice). I am contemplating giving teh spider x a try since I have a 40% off coupon at Taylormade. Would appreciate any comparisons.

I went to PGA-SS in Austin yesterday ... spent over an hour hitting 10+ face-balanced mallets. Some like the Ping Sigma and Taylormade Spiders were a bit lighter than I liked. The triple Track, O-Works Red and Exo putters did not suit my eye (seemed too busy). Favorites included Odyssey White Hot Rossie #5, SeeMore SB20, Ping Heppler Ketsch, and the O-Works Black 2-Ball. Loved the Stroke Labs R-Line's balance and roll (never thought I would like an oversized grip ... decisions, decisions ...

Note: They did not have a Stroke Labs Rossie #5 ... need to try one of those too!

Went from blade to wide blade to mallet and then back to mid-mallet. The big mallets were too big a change for me. I was looking for stability and the mid-mallets deliver that. So putters like the Odyssey V-Line or Evnroll ER7 are in that tweener size that I prefer. Definitely has helped on shorter putts.

If you can find a Guerin Tour Spec 355 gram mallet, give it a try. I think it's one of his best designs, and it would still be in my bag if my wife hadn't bought me an EvnRoll ER8 for an anniversary gift.

New to the Golf WRX forums, but I play a Spider X and never looked back at blades. For me, it's the combination of weight distribution and MOI that makes the Spider X so worth it. There are other putters out there with similar enough shape (Odyssey Stroke Lab Ten, Triple Track Ten, SC Phantom X 12, etc.) that would feel just like it. Luckily, the Spider X is a putter that's gained so much popularity (and rightfully so) that you can try it at any local golf shop. FYI - you can pick up heavier weights from TM's website for a Spider X to REALLY amp up the weight and MOI feel.

I just picked up a TM FCG, which is their new Spider iteration in a mallet shape but with their weight (tungsten) moved towards the front so it feels like a blade but with the remaining third of the weight still in the back cavity to act like a mallet while retaining a high MOI. I'm planning on trying out the two to figure out which one I like. There's EVNROLL and SC Squareback putters (I know Odyssey has its own) where it's a blade shape but about 1.5-2x the size to have the weight but not necessarily the mallet shape.

So, I’ve been a lifelong blade putter guy and I thought I may need a little more forgiveness. I decided on the Seemore SB 20 offset because I’m a SBST putter and wanted something face balanced. I also really liked the idea that I could change the head weights (hoping Seemore will be getting the heavy weight kit soon). First, the balance of the SB20 is just fantastic- it feels effortless to swing and seems to “want” to stay square to the target. The key to me is that the distance control with the larger sweet spot of the mallet is just fantastic- my 3 putt woes were mostly due to lag putting. That’s not to say it hasn’t been great with the all important 4-10 foot range, which I’ve been making more of the these critical putts since switching to the mallet. I can’t see myself ever going back to a blade.
