Ping i500 iron tip size?

I've had issues with replacement shafts in my i500s. I bought them reshafted and all of them got loose. I had a Golf Galaxy re-epoxy them, and they all got loose again. Finally, I had a custom shop repair them using shims because they said the hosels are tapered; so far, no issues.

They are 355 tapered but require ferules with collars.  The top of the bore  has a lip the collar centers in.

The ferrules are the key. If you have the collared ferrules you can use .335 or .370 no problem. The only issue you will run across is getting the ferrule over the tip of the shaft if using a .370. When I have done this I just heat up some water and put the ferrules in to soften them a bit and they can slide over.

For some reason, the guy who repaired my i500s, a fitter who is always on the top 100 fitters in the country (so no dummy), used both the Ping ferrules and shims on mine.

The shaft fit is super loose on these newer Ping's.  There is plenty of room to use a shim.

OK, from what's been said in replies, I can only conclude ping i500 shafts are in fact 0.370.

You're assuming there are only two possibilities but that's not really the case.   Ping does use a tapered hosel, not a .370 parallel hosel.  it's just a taper that's very different from the standard .355 tapered hosel.

Why do they do that?  I have no idea.  Personally I think it's an annoyance.

That's wierd. Does that mean the original ping i500 shafts are neither 0.355 or 0.370?

No.  It means that they were .355 tp.  At least I've never heard of special shafts being made for ping to fit the taper.

Really it just ends up being a lot looser than 'normal' near the top of the hosel (which is were the need for a collared ferrule comes into play).  I can't say I've ever tried it but I doubt a .370 shaft would be able to be inserted fully in the Pings. It's still very narrow at the bottom of the hosel.

I'd imagine Ping doesn't want people like us to tinker with their shafts and heads. That'd also mean my i500 shafts can't be repurposed in irons other than another ping product?

No, it doesn't mean that.  It's just the hosel that's different, not the shafts.

There may be some odd outlier clubs but to my knowledge ALL Ping irons going back to at least the Eye2 days use .355 taper tip shafts.

Ping hosel's have a large clearance around the shaft, even going back to the old days.  Prior to adoption of hosel weights, such as the newer clubs like the G700/710, G410, and i500 use, the Ping hosel design was such that while there was a lot of clearance around the shaft there was also a small portion at the very bottom of the hosel that was an interference fit.  For these clubs you have to drive the shaft into the head or the shaft won't reach the bottom of the hosel.  This feature did two things: it helped center the shaft in the large clearance hosel, and it also kept the head from spinning on the shaft after assembly thus allowing the club to be handled while the adhesive was setting up.

Bottom line, for reshafting the newer clubs you should use the proper Ping ferrules and treat the cleaning and shaft prep process with the utmost of care.  There is a link to a thread I started discussing these shafting nuances which should be mandatory reading for people reshafting these clubs for the first time.  Learn from my mistakes...

370 doesn't seat all the way- though very little sanding is required to make one fully insert [>335-350]
