Help Me Find My Dream Game-Improvement Irons

Recommended Posts

I will check out the FG Tour V2's.  Thanks for pointing them out to me.  The offset looks pretty good.  The ideal offset for me is when, looking down, the leading edge is dead on line with the left edge of the shaft.  That is actually a hint of offset because zero offset gives the illusion of the leading edge ahead of the shaft.

Posting those catalog pages made me realize how much I missed the days of component clubmaking.  I did a lot of it as it let me indulge my interest in trying different things without spending a fortune.  Of course, the stuff had little resale value, which may be why it is so difficult to find clubs such as the On-Line today.

That and the fact that they probably just didn't sell that many of them.  I always wondered what constituted a production run of one of those models.  For years I coveted a Maltby set called the Logic Gold, a low profile set of irons that was in my mind an update on the Browning 440.  I missed out on them when they were available new, and it took me years to finally run across a set at a Play It Again Sports.  I've only seen one set on Ebay in nearly 20 years.  They sold all of them they made, but perhaps they just didn't make that many of them.  One would think such things would show up more often in the thrifts than they do.

It's my opinion that rapid OEM cycles really harmed component clubmaking.  The annual availability of OEM sets at deeply discounted prices destroyed the value advantage component clubmaking had.  Also, customization of OEM gear is much more readily available today than it used to be as well, which was another selling point of component clubmaking.

I tend to agree with you on the component thing. Most component companies kept a line out for several years unlike mainstream companies whose stuff in those days ran a couple of years themselves not a few months like now. A lot of the component making rested on a local reputable builder fitter for that area. Infiniti Wishon and KZG were strong here because of a couple fitters that have gone out of business now. And I think the mainstream of golf has changed no one knows about custom component fitters anymore. My bud here was the Miura dealer here until he retired. I can remember going to courses where they did not know us and guys at the bag drops who by the way were in the PGM program thought Miura were some kind of cheap knock off. Yep an entirely different dynamic here at least from even 10 years ago

Here is an update.  I finally found the clubs I have been looking for.  I found online a set of Daiwa DG-1 heads.  These are very rare irons.  I suppose the DG stands for David Graham, since he was on Daiwa staff for a while.  I bought the heads, put in S300 shafts with shims (because the hosels were .370"), and after trimming down to length and putting the grips on I finally reached The Promised Land.  They have almost no offset and the lofts are weaker.  Check these out.  I show the 3-iron offset.  The set has a 10 iron and an 11 iron, and I suppose the 10 is 48 degrees and the 11 at 52.  I would like to find the matching 2 iron, but for now I am very happy with what I have.

This is an update to this old thread.  One day I was bored and going on an auction whim I did a search of the Dynacraft On-Line irons.  Lo and behold, for just that week a set of On-Line irons, 3-9 irons, were on sale for $50.  I made an offer for $30 and he countered with $40, so I grabbed it.  Fortunately for me, the set was only for 3-9, and if you look at the specs sheet earlier in this thread, the lofts of the wedges are not what I want (48, 52 and 56 degrees).  Immediately after the irons purchase I did a curious wedge search of 48, 52 and 56 degrees and Lo and behold, found a matching set of Powerbilt X-Grind wedges in 48, 52 and 56 degrees.  I grabbed them also for another $40.

While waiting for the irons I reckoned that I will be doing some more trimming/extending and re-gripping, but when the sets arrived they came in the perfect lofts I was looking for (i.e., 37.5" 5 iron), and the wedges were all 35.5", so this was perfect for me.  The only work I did with this new set was just to clean the clubs and reset some ferrules because some of them were separated from the hosel edge.  I had to do no custom work.

So here is the set and I will show you pictures of the offset.  Great golf clubs!  I just played them today and they are very good clubs.
