5 Hybrid vs. 5 Iron

rwl

Recommended Posts

Top end of my bag goes: driver, 3w, 5w, 3h, 5i.

I dropped the 4i and skipped to a weak 3h because that's where my distances started bunching up.

There was no use in keeping the 4i or finding a 4h for that spot to cover the distance gap. Forget loft numbers.

I hit my 5i right on 155. 3.5h is 165-170. 5w is 180-185. 3w right on 200, and the driver gets out to 215-220.

My 5i is very accurate, the 3h is great off the tee or out of rough, and 5w is the long easy fairway club if the extra 3w distance can't reach and isn't worth it.

I actually just had my first round with a 5 iron that replaced my 5 iron and I have to say I was very happy with the results.  I normally carry my 5 iron about 180 with a medium trajectory that rolls out some and I was able to get that same yardage with the 5 hybrid and it just stopped like a wedge when it landed.

I ditched my 5 iron for a Ping G410 hybrid. Reason being it's easier to hit and gets up way higher. It's a no brainer for me.

A club that can be hit with poor technique is not in my book a good thing.

I disagree. A club that yields decent results with a less than optimal strike is a GREAT thing for amateur golfers!

I thought i would never put a 5 iron in the bag until I got a set of Ping G 700's, they are all hybrids to some extent. I can actually hit this 5 iron, amazing. My hybrids are longer though, but with the 700's, not by much. I will probably put the 6 hybrid back in the bag, for those days the irons do not cooperate, but right now I trust my irons more, and that is very unusual.

I currently have a 5 hybrid and a 5 iron in the bag, 818h1 at 25 degrees and p770 at 25 degrees, but one goes 193 or so, the other 182. I’m looking at dhy 5 iron also at 25 to replace the p770, but it’s 3/4 longer stock, so it will likely fly in mid 180s. I’ll look to either shorten it, or bring the 818h1 to 24.

my next hybrid is 21 818h1, set to 20. I’m considering also bring it up to 23, dropping 25 h1 and putting either a 5  Wood or 19 degree hybrid in the bag.

for me the gapping at this end of the bag is an issue, as is how easy the clubs are to hit. I’m only generally hitting 3w-5i, once a round or so.  Need them to be nailed on yardage and ultra easy to hit out of any lie.

I’m also considering dropping my 56 wedge to allow me carry 2 clubs with similar yardages for different shots at his end.

I hit my p770 5 iron fine, it’s just not as versatile as hybrid/driving iron options.

For several seasons I've gamed 4 (21-23°), 5 (24-25°) and my first iron is usually a 26-27° 6 iron and 4° progression through the rest of the set. I read some time ago that Jim Furyk said amateur golfers don't carry enough hybrids and he believes that every hybrid in the bag would shave 2-4 stokes per round.

I was fit for my current set of irons and we dropped the 5 iron and went with a 5H.  I really do not use my 6 iron much and am thinking about dropping that so that I can bring back a lob wedge.

While it certainly will be more forgiving and easier to hit (even ignoring the longer shaft), to me the decision is not quite that simple. I say that thinking about other shots you need- like extricating yourself from the trees. You can’t hit a 6i low and very far and I find hybrids tough to hit hard and still keep low. Most tend to swing too hard which brings up spin into the tree you are trying to avoid. Do you have the discipline to just chip out and take it?

if you do it I would at least consider carrying a 4i to extricate yourself from the trees. You may find you hit the 3 and 4 hybrid similar distances and don’t need both so that would give you the space for it. Something to think about.

Bah. Of course you can. My lowest lofted iron is a 7 iron, and I can punch out like the best of them. Simply play the ball back in your stance a bit, and/or forward press, and the ball comes out low.

Ditched my 5 iron several years ago. I use a 23* Adams Pro hybrid in it's place.

The key for me was using an iron-like hybrid that I can hit clean out of the rough, punch out of trouble and still control trajectory and spin going into par 3's off the tee. There's a bit of a distance gap between this club and my 6 iron, choking down 1 inch cuts that gap in half no problem though.

Does it feel odd having less irons in my bag than all my playing partners? Yes. Do I beat them every time because I've taken my ego out of the bag? Yes.

In general I concur with the main idea in this thread.

I would reiterate that you need to pay attention to loft and distance, not just the number on the club. A 5h does not necessarily replace a 5i, particularly for newer game improvement (GI) irons.

From this thread, I can pull a couple of examples. One poster plays Callaway X14, another Apex 19. The 6i in the Apex 19 set will go as far as 5i in the X14 set, even though the latter has a 1/2" longer shaft.

The break point between last iron and first hybrid will depend on your swing speed and ability to compress/flight the ball with the irons. I have an average driver swing speed of 95, and I carry my 26 degree Mizuno HM 6i 163 yards. I skip 5h and 5i and go to Ping G410 4h set to 23.5 degrees. I have a short-ish 27 degree 5h that goes the same distance as my 6i, but currently I am hitting the 6i pretty well, and straighter than the 5h.

I'm not sure I saw it in anyone else's posting here:  A hybrid needs to have more loft than the iron it replaces.

I cannot imagine playing a GI 5i unless my swing speed were to increase by 5 mph (goal for the winter!).

I know it sounds so "old man" but if you want to make a change in your 5-iron slot and can't seem to get along with a hybrid, give the 9-wood a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I love my G410 9 wood.  Favorite club in my bag.  Paired it with a Ventus 7S and a playing length of 40.5 inches w/ a 20g weight in the head to help offset the swing weight reduction.  So easy to hit.
