But of course I'm subtracting twice. Or even worse, having to decide whether I'm subtracting or adding (if it's higher than 5).

 

Your example - 654545455. And with 6s it's worse because the "subtraction" is really an "addition" (to total).

 

Take your example above. 5-6=-1, but now I have to "remember" to ADD, not subtract, 1 to 45 = 46. And then, for the next 5 I now have it at 46, then 5-4=1, 46-1=45, then the next and so on. So I AM doing 2 "calcs" per (unless I see a "5"), even if it's only to recognize a "0" (5-5) result and remember the total before moving on.

You're right.  I'm taking for granting that I've done it this way ever since I was knee high to a duck and some old character at the nine-hole track I grew up on showed it to me.

 

I guess we can call it one of my many useless talents, and I have a lot of them.

If it makes you feel better last week I was 37 front and 37 back and wrote down 75.  I didn’t look at the front 9 scores for our group at the end and for some reason I had 38 in my head.... whoops

I'm curious if you know what your index was at the time? On a 67.5/115 course that is a differential of .5 so if you had done that today you wouldn't even get hit with an exceptional score reduction if your index is 6.0.

 

Great round made to look even better by a 2 on a 376 yard par 4. I had one of those last year where I hit a bad drive and hit a low, running 4-iron towards the green that hit the pin with a lot of speed and somehow dropped dead in the hole. If it had not hit the pin perfectly I was looking at a 4 at the best and more likely a 5 as I would have been off the back of the green and short-sided. That easily cut 2 or 3 strokes off my score.

Around 6. I’ve been as low as 3 but that was 5 years ago and lately I move between 5-8.

I just go + for bogey, - for birdie (and ++ or -- for better/worse) and leave the par scores blank.  Only need to add the plusses and subtract the minuses.
