Maxfli tour vs Snell MTB-X - I was not expecting this.

Last year and the first few months of the playing season this year, I played the MTB-X so I feel like I know it quite well.

After MGS did their ball review, I decided to try the Maxfli Tour.  Couldn't really put my hands on any one thing, but this ball just seem to perform for me.  At the time, I really didn't think it was longer than the MTB-X, but it just seem to feel better.

Fast forward 5 months and today I decided to go back to the MTB-X for 18 holes to see if I was missing something by playing the Maxfli Tour... perhaps some added distance, spin, whatever.

I was playing the course that I've played the most this year, so I was pretty familiar with how far I was hitting my drives on this course and where to play your shots into the greens and with how much spin.

Much to my surprise, my drives did seem to be slightly longer.  Edge to MTB-X.

Accuracy was similar to what I have experienced with the Maxfli Tour.  No advantage to either ball.

On the green, I noticed that the MTB-X was a little more livelier off the putter face and I had to actually soften my stroke a little.  Took a few holes to get used to that.  No advantage to either ball.

Spin was pretty similar.  Greens were pretty firm and it was just plain hard to hold greens, but I didn't see the MTB-X spin any more or less than the Maxfli Tour.  No advantage to either ball.

But the biggest difference was with irons.  My iron shots were almost consistently shorter with the MTB-X than what I have experienced with the Maxfli Tour.  It was so bad that I actually considered clubbing down to make my necessary distances.  Edge to Maxfli Tour.

Because I hit far more iron shots than I do with the driver, I'm going to keep the Maxfli Tour in the bag because I can live with the loss of a couple yards on my drives, but my irons were dialed in with the Maxfli Tour and I just can't afford to go back to the MTB-X and figure out the distances all over again.

I guess I should include price and with the 2 for $ 50 price of the Maxfli Tour... they are even cheaper than the direct-to-consumer price of the MTB-X.

I love both of these balls.  Actually, love both Snell offerings and both Maxfli Tour offerings.   I have no fear putting these in play over my Pro V1s.  And don’t get the anxiety when a long over water shot is needed or a harder shot in general where I could lose a ball.

I haven’t used MTB Black this year but will likely try them out.  Loved the MTB-X but I too felt like they must have spun too much with irons and driver as they felt slightly shorter to me.  Could just be my perception (that isn’t reality).  The Maxfli Tour and Tour -X fell longer both on the tee and with irons.

I have always loved Pro V1 and tried a sleeve of Bridgestone B XS and liked them and TP5 have always been good but of all those love me Titleist most.

That said, I think I will continue to play Snell MTB and Maxfli Tour lines as I don’t feel there is hardly any compromise besides price.

I also had the same experience with the Snell MTB-X being shorter for me with my iron shots(1/2-1 club shorter).  The Snell MTB-Black was equal to the Maxfli Tour-X with iron distance for me.

I can't give you a direct comparison to the Snell MTB-X, but I bought two dozen Maxfli Tour-X (when they were 2 for $35 earlier this year ... kicking myself for not buying more!).  I was very happy with their performance, no noticeable distance difference between Bridgestone Tour B X and Srixon Z-star XV (which I had played most often before), lots of spin on full shots (backing up wedges a few feet, longer irons staying where they land), and plenty of grab on chips and pitches.  I think this is the best deal in golf ... and if they ever go back to 2 for $35, I'm loading up.  I would note, I did not try the Tour, only the Tour-X.

Interesting, I just started playing with the MTB-X and I absolutely love it.  It does everything well and is clearly a high end tour quality ball.  I will take a look at the Maxfli but the Snell has me feeling like I don't need to look anywhere else.

I have not used the Maxfli matte even tho I prefer the looks of a matte ball.  I do not like how they get dirty or scuff quicker than the gloss covers.

their yellow I have used and I like it. I love both the Tour and Tour x

How does the matte cover play & feel? Does it get dirty. I usually prefer a glossy finish and yellow color.

Unfortunately, the last batch I got was only available in the matte so I'm playing those now. Gotta second @Minaretson how dirty and scuffed they get/. Fortunately, I basically got this batch of balls for free after stacking DSG coupons so I'm not cursing myself too much when I lose a ball.

I haven't played the Matte finish. I have the gloss yellow. I find that if the bounce or the cart path or hit a tree the yellow can kind of come off a little but the cover doesn't seem to scuff any worse than another gloss ball.

Not to hijack but, Has anyone compared the Maxfli tour to the TM Tour Response? New price with no sales in comparable so I was curious.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

Taylormade Sim Max 7w Mitsubishi Diamana F Limited 75S

I have both the matte and gloss... started with the gloss and the accidentally bought a dozen of the matte and found that it was much easier to find, especially in the fall... weird. It's also easier to identify when your playing patterns are playing glossy white and you hit into the same area.

You just can't beat the performance for the price - 2 dozen for $ 50 or less with a coupon.

Showing 2 dozen for $60 now at DSG and GG.

Saw that last night.  2 for $60 is still a bread deal for this ball, imo but I have enough to wait for the 2 for $50 deal again.

I'm guessing that there'll be a good sale on Black Friday on these. Going to wait and try these out if they do.

I live in Vancouver, Canada and my nearest Dick's is in Bellingham (a 30-45 min drive away).   I would love to get a dozen when the border opens up.  I don't want to order it online, the shipping costs would make it the same price as the Pro V1.
