Smooth swing power hitters, lets discuss lag.

First person that comes to mind is Freddy Couples.  Perfect example of a smooth swing that uses lag to gain a lot of swing speed.

For any of you that have achieved this feat, can you please talk about your swing and swing thoughts to creating more lag/wip in your swing and how you rotate your hands?

Questions that come to mind:

1) at the beginning of your down swing, do you focus on dropping your right elbow first?

2) at what point do you begin to start the rotation of your right hand in your down swing?

3) any other specific details of your hands, arms, etc that you think about to generate more club head speed?

Thank you for your time.

For me, I have to stay very smooth to get away with all the bad lag I create.  Bad in the sense that my lead wrist tends to cup causing me to pull the club steep and open the face.  If I don't stay smooth and let the club fully rotate through impact, I can miss the ball so far left (I'm a lefty), its comical.

I can't really answer the first two questions that you list, because for me, I feel naturally swinging the clubhead accomplishes those things.  If I want to maximize distance, I tee the ball up as high as I can, get more spine tilt, and really maximize launch conditions. I try to stay even smoother and slower but make as big of a turn as I can then make sure that the clubface and more importantly my body doesn't stop rotating through impact.

I think the quest for big lag can be counterproductive if you get it the way I do, but most of that has to do with me being naturally right handed and playing golf lefty.  Being opposite handed means I am pulling the club in the downswing.  I get narrow and steep much like Phil Mickelson does.  The difference is I only have enough talent to occasionally shoot within 3 shots of the course rating with that move.

Doc - try hitting from the "right" side.

Purely anecdotal, but almost all of the "smooth swing power hitters" I've ever played with would likely be unable to answer your questions.  They tend produce their power naturally and usually aren't big swing lesson/swing thought-type players - at least so far as developing power/speed.

I've been close to switching many a frustrated time.  I figured it could give me the chance to fall in love with golf all over again.  My right handed swing is much more fundamentally sound.

One of the key swing thoughts for me is to keep my hands low through impact.  So from the top, to get my hands feeling low at impact, it feels like I'm flattening the club and creating lag almost as a side effect.  All other methods of creating lag feel forced to me, which is the enemy of a smooth tempo swing.  I need everything to feel flowy.

Im not the longest guy out there, but I'm pretty quick with a smooth transition.

My right elbow drops unconsciously as my hips rotate to start the downswing.

I don't feel like I rotate my right hand.  During transition my left wrist bows to close the face some and my body rotation during the downswing finishes squaring the face.

When I'm trying to generate speed I do not think of my hands and arms at all.  I focus on starting down with my hips and getting them around as quickly as I can, the hands follow along.

Watch this

Monte must be one of the fiercest opponents of „lag“ as a source of power, as opposed to it being a result of proper swing mechanics.
If you have 22 bucks left, look into his newest instruction video, „No-Turn Cast“. It’s eye opening.

For a free demonstration, watch him play golf in the link above and hit smooth 325 yard drives at age what, 53? Amazing.
His 9 iron has 49 degrees of loft and he used it on a 168 yard par 3 in another vlog of Be Better Golf.
It‘s all mechanics. Not that I’m anywhere close to mastering it yet, but I’m still hopeful.

I never think about elbows, hands or arms.

I have basically 2 swing thoughts:

Stay tall and turn my chest away from the target as far as possible (I have a tendency to dip my head a little on the backswing).

Stay tall/keep my chin up on the downswing (gives me more room to clear in the initial part of the downswing, but there is still of course some dip)

Everything else happens automatically. I'm focused on the target and visualize the shot. Then besides those thoughts listed above, the body and years of practice does the rest on autopilot.

My swing is not super buttery smooth like Freddie's, but I hit it pretty far without feeling like I'm swinging that hard.

1.) Have never thought of dropping right elbow

2.) Have never thought of rotating right hand

3.) I try to throw the club into the ground behind my right heel

Being only 5'7, I feel as though I have to pull hard on the downswing and drop my elbow into the slot.  The most important thing for me is to initiate the down swing with my hips and rotate as quickly as possible and let my arms drop naturally.  The rest will take care of itself.  If I absolutely tattoo one off the tee, it will carry over 290 assuming conditions are pretty benign.
