Myrtle Beach sleepers??

Recommended Posts

Play True Blue and Caledonia twice. Anything better is going to be a very long drive away from the south end which I assume is where you are staying by the courses you listed. Prestwick near the airport is a good Dye course and better than Heritage Club in my opinion and should be similar cost (no idea on current conditions of any of these).

TPC Myrtle Beach is (maybe) half a step below Caledonia, and (at least) a step above the rest on your list. Same general area as well. I was expecting it to be punishing, being a TPC course, and it probably was from the tips, but from the middle tees, it was challenging but very fair.

Tradition Club, Willbrook, and Wachesaw East are also south of MB proper, and great tracks. Have not personally played Blackmoor, but have heard great things about it. The International is a cheaper option in that area, but nothing special. Indigo Creek is a hard pass unless you're looking for a super cheap round or are looking for someplace to take non-golfers for a round.

Arrowhead, which is just north of the airport, is a fantastic, very underrated track. Conditions are always spectacular, and it's a fun layout with 27 holes.

World Tour Golf Links is one of my favorites. Also just north of the airport. Replicas of famous holes from around the world (#1 at St. Andrews, TPC Sawgrass #17, Amen Corner, etc.). They're obviously not exact replicas, but it's a really fun layout regardless.

There have been a wide range of courses mentioned on this thread.

Here's a link to photo tours of most of the courses mentioned.

Myrtle Beach Golf Course Photo Tours

If I had to rank them, it would be as follows:

Caledonia  A

True Blue A

TPC  B+

Heritage B (but A for value)

Prestwick  B

Pawleys Plantation B (front B-, back B+)

Willbrook  B

World Tour B-

Arrowhead B- (but A for conditioning)

Tradition  C

Blackmoor C-

Wachesaw E- C-

International D

Indigo Creek D

Heading to Myrtle Beach with a few friends this week and looking for some recommendations? As of now we are looping True Blue, Caledonia, Heritage Club and Pawleys.

Thanks

Do you belong to a country club at home? If so see if your pro can get you on The Reserve Club (Greg Norman design), Wachesaw Plantation Club (Fazio Design but not the same course as Wachesaw East), or DeBordieu Club (Pete Dye). These are all private clubs near True Blue/Caledonia in the Pawleys Island area and better than most courses on the south end.

IMO, Heritage is as close in caliber to True Blue and Caledonia as can be because it is mostly a Mike Strantz course like those other two (Strantz didn't route it but he basically overhauled the greens and bunkers while he was building Caledonia). It's in better and better shape every time I play it, too.

Agree about Prestwick - it's really solid.

Sounds like you're about to have a great trip!

Heritage is really good.  True Blue and Caledonia are also really good options but I think one of the sleepers is Pawley's Plantation.  It's a good Nicklaus course and is more reasonably priced than TB and Caledonia.

If you want a decent course that is pretty cheap try the one at Myrtlewood with the finishing hole along the intercostal waterway.  I think it's the Palmetto and it's got some nice holes on it with 18 being one of the best finishing holes you'll ever play.  We always started there in the spring when nobody had played in a while.  It's a good warmup and it's usually like $60.

So The trip is coming to an end and I’ve  played Caledonia, True Blue, Prestwick, Heritage, Pawleys, tpc and tomorrow is River Club

hands down my favorite has been Caledonia. I could play this course every single day. Feels like a private club. Everything about it was great.
