Ping PLD Prime Tyne??

The_Champ

Recommended Posts

I got mine today and rolled a few on the local putting green (which is in terrible shape). I like it so far—solid feel, looks amazing, rolls the ball nicely.

it definitely does have a higher pitched sound, more ping-y than the vault 2 dale anser I’ve been rolling. Can’t say for sure if the lack of face tech matters, but I imagine that’s a feel/preference thing and not really a performance thing; lots of good putters roll the rock with a smooth face. Feel on center strikes is great—a solid pleasing vibration—you know you hit it perfectly.

I’m playing 18 this Saturday—that will be the test.

Yes I'm antsy...how was it during the round?

It's a good putter--to be honest, I don't notice a huge difference from the Vault 2 Dale Anser, but that's a good thing for me, because that is my beloved gamer.

The Tyne has a nicer sound (slightly more tingy than the pretty muted click of the Dale), but even though the Dale's face is etched, I don't notice a huge difference in feel, and in fact I think that the Tyne gives more pleasing vibrations--it feels really nice when you hit it in the center of the face. Off center strikes feel deader, but I've never had a putter where that wasn't the case. In terms of whether the non-milled face matters, I find it really hard to say, and don't really care that much; I didn't have any moments today when I was surprised or perplexed by the way the ball came off the face or the way it did or did not hold its line.

The weight difference between the two putters is only 10g, so it's not huge, but I do think that will take a little getting used to.

Basically, I put it in play on a course with difficult greens, and think it was as good as the Dale. For me, that's a good first round, and I think I might get more comfortable with it over time. I'm definitely using it next weekend. I'm trying to decide how I feel about the grip. It's nice, but I'm used to a Cameron pistolero, and I think that the more pronounced pistol part of the grip is something I need--it helps to keep my left hand quieter and the back of my hand flatter.

The Tyne is totally badass looking. I thought about maybe painting the sight line white (I like a sight line on the flange), but because the paint there is a little glossy, I don't need to paint it white. It's subtle, but you can see it, and that's works for me.

Just ordered one. Normally I think spending that much on a putter is ridiculous, but these just look amazing.

Awesome. Let me know what you think of it. One of the things that went into my decision was that since it's a PLD putter, I'd always be able to sell it if it doesn't work out. It didn't seem like a huge risk to me.

Ping has a multicam mid-mallet headcover that I use with my other “real” PLDs.  For whatever reason, the new PLD Prime Tyne 4 feels much softer than my other “real” PLDs.  I am going to change the grip on one of the new ones and see how it feels.  I like the Prime Tyne 4 though.  I like(d) the PLD3 as well.

Agreed—it def has a soft feel. Prob the carbon steel combined with the somewhat squishy grip. Will be interested to hear how it feels with a firmer grip on it.

For those interested in this putter it's worth noting some retailers are selling it for 399, some for 440 and some for 499.  Shop around.

And secondary market at 800+ in some cases.

Yeah I saw that too, although have seen most in the 400-450 range lately. I would have snagged one by now if the face was milled. Not a fan of the smooth face.

It's always the lefty gear getting jacked up on the secondary market. I balked on the Tyne 4 as it's not a shape I use much. If it was a Anser PLD then I would have been after one new to avoid secondary prices.

After some headaches with FedEx, mine finally showed up this morning. What a beauty! I was surprised by how much smaller than the regular Tyne it really is. Not much larger than my Sigma 2 Arna. The non-milled face is obviously not soft, but I certainly wouldn't call it hard. It's a crisp positive feeling that I rather like. I can't wait to game this.

I rolled the putter for the first time today at my local golf store. I’m a Ping guy at heart but for mostly their older stuff.  I don’t really like their new irons since the S55’s and i200/210’s.  I do love the new woods and hybrids but now I’m meandering off topic.

Anyways, in general I don’t like putters with inserts so this PLD is right up my alley.  I love the look...simple, clean and tasty. It feels very solid at impact and the all black shaft and darkened finish is evil, in a good way.  I am very tempted to buy it but at $439.00 + tax it’s something that’ll take some nights to sleep on it, thus I left empty-handed.

I keep hearing this comment on how small it is. How small is it really?

One of the smallest fang style putters is the Toulon Portland (too small in my opinion).  How does it compare to that? TM Ardmore 3? Scotty Cameron X5?

OK, I just played another round with this putter last night--I'm sold on it for a while. The weight and balance are great, the sound and feel are awesome, and it flat out rolls the rock. It's a keeper for me.

Just curious if you could put the smaller size into perspective.  I get it’s smaller than a regular Signs Tyne, but is that just shorter fangs or is it heel to toe as well?  How would you compare it to a Toulon Portland? Ardmore 3? Scotty X5?  Thanks in advance...

Ok here are some pics. It’s pretty small—here’s one pic next to a golf ball and one next to my Ping Vault 2. It’s shorter heel to toe than the Dale. Hope this helps.

I don’t really know those other putters so can’t compare it to them.
