My dad hits every iron the same distance..... wtf?

Recommended Posts

Had a great range session with Dad last night, we were both hitting the ball quite well. I was keeping an eye on him and he still strikes the ball very well, but every iron from his GW to his 7 iron fly the same carry distance. Maybe 10 yards in differential between the shortest G and longest 7. It blew my mind lol. He plays Wilson v4s, s300. Too much club for his swing surely... (guy played apex PCs since 85) was always a down and thru guy, used to hit these rising shots when I was a kid that left me in awe.

So throughout the session, I would watch him hit 5 great shots (strong contact, clean strikes, straight flights) and then I would hand him my club in the same number. Now my clubs are r11 taylormades, with KBS 90 stiff. Big cavity, perimeter weighted, wide sole, light shaft, stronger lofted..... and they did not provide him any more height, or carry. But he struck them equally well.

FYI he had esophageal cancer 2 years ago, went thru all the treatments and eventually the surgery to remove his esophagus and essentially stretch his stomach up to make up the gap. So hes not exactly moving as well as he once did, but man his movements are solid, he turns his body he doesn't sway to hard, has a bit of a slide move, but he strikes it so well. Not quite the forward shaft lean I'd like to see, but its not drastically bad.

So hes playing a players style CB essentially, with stiff fairly heavy shafts, one thing was for sure when he hit my irons, you could see they didn't quite have the spin that his Wilsons make. And were hitting limited flight Srixon range balls, so I was telling him not to pay too much attention to the carry distances, but surely each club should carry further as you work through the bag.

I'd estimate his good drives carry about 175-180 rolling out past 200, and super consistent flight and distance, hits his 3 wood as well, and his 5 wood. They have proportionately longer distances than each other, but man those irons are all flying the same distance. I said to him if you were trying to hit them all the same distance on purpose, man that's quite a skill lol, but he wasn't of course, that's just what hes getting out of them.

What should I do to help the guy? Using my GI clubs didn't make a difference, he hit my PW the same distance as my 7 iron, only with visibly less spin than his clubs.... so I don't think taking away spin is going to help, surely the spin he creates helps the ball to fly further... does he need hybrids and senior flex shafts? Will that even help to correct it? Or is it more a technique thing? I'm no expert, but like I said his motion looks fine to me for an old boy.

Any suggestions? Hes pretty fit, still lifting 5 days a week, and working in the yard like a bugger, 64 yo. I try not to be demeaning to the guy ya know, I don't wanna tell him he needs shovels and whips for shafts, and after hitting my clubs the same, he sure isn't convinced new equipment will help him. Hes going to start doing some more mobility type exersizes this winter, and branching off a bit from the traditional lifting he does.

Should I just book him in for a iron fitting and go from there? Hes old school he doesn't really buy into all the gear stuff, and he isnt gonna fork out big dough for new fitted clubs, but I could def build him up a set based on the fit... maybe just some softer shafts for his heads cause I think the trad loft and nice levels of spin are helping him more than hurting.

Anyways long winded I know, appreciate any help or tips guys!

its a swing flaw along with *probably* equipment too stiff for him. i did this after an injury once. It was funny and bewildering at the same time.

He needs to use more body and less arms, more rotation, etc.

In one of Harvey Penick's books, he mentioned older golfers often start hitting their irons all the same distance.  I have noticed the same with some of the older guys in my regular group.  In your father's case, and I'm purely guessing, the cancer treatment has probably left him a lot weaker and slower than before.  Whether his issues are physical or technical, your idea of getting him an iron fitting is right on target.  Good luck!

Same distance and same height? If yes, is he flipping and putting more loft on the longer, lower lofted clubs? Just a thought. Try this, on the range, have him get into address position without a club. Have him close his eyes. You put a club in his hands and align it to the ball. Keep eyes closed. On the count of three, he opens his eyes and swings. He won't know what club he is hitting and won't have any preconceived notion of how far he is going to hit the ball. If he hits the 7 or 8 like he used to, it is something mental, if not, then it is maybe equipment related (weight of club, swingweight, etc.) then have him fitted. Maybe a reshaft of his existing irons if he wants to keep the look.

This happened to me in 2018. I came back to the game. I was skulling and hitting fat with great ease and consistency. Of course there was some good strikes in there, but not enough for quelling frustration. I turned to the interweb for help and inspiration. I came across some 'bad for me advice'...that from woods down to wedges, the normal address to the ball progressively moves deeper in the stance toward the trailing foot, respectively. My swing already had compounded flaws(multiple things needing correction) and all I did was introduce another. When I gave up on this foolishness, I was then able to realize that I was effectively lofting the long irons, hitting mid irons normal, and de-lofting the short irons/wedges.

I had also lost some mis-hit reading mojo from my hiatus. It has since come back.

*try leaving the even numbered irons out of the bag, and then having to use the remaining clubs to hit the missing yardages with differing trajectories. 😉

For your consideration, make an appointment with a fitter who has a  launch monitor.  Get to the facts and address issues that come up, be it equipment or swing related. You have options.
