Shocked at how many pros tip drivers 1", many other people do this?

I have a Mizuno ST190 with CK Pro Orange tipped 1". I added loads of tape to get the SW to D4 (from C5).  Works as advertised!   The club feels like it "snaps" through the zone: my distances are bigger since installing this and I am hitting more fairways. Been working on my swing too, but having this setup certainly helped me.  My SS is 114-115 unless I am really opening it up (which I try not to do; timing has to be perfect for me to wind up that additional 10 degrees and still hit it straight).

@RoyalMustang wow that's the exact shaft I've been eyeing but damn they are expensive and tipping it may kill any resell value unless you market it as for a 3 wood. Wish I could try yours lol.

Did you try any other counterbalanced one? Feel like the first success I've ever had with a driver (dropping my handicap tremendously) was with the oban gold one and may should limit new ones to counterbalanced ones.

Nice to see couple of you are and have been.

Do like that suggestion of tipping some cheap shafts, may can even find one tipped with some ebay searches but nothing I saw yet.

Btw numbers from one a pic I had are 118 club speed 160 ball speed, 14.2 launch, 3373 spin, carry 271.7, total 275.4. Not sure if those numbers would help on knowing to tip or not. Those are with an epic 10.5 turned up a degree with oban kiyoshi gold 75x shaft

EDIT: Well, after reading the entire thread (as I should have done before posting), I see that your CHS is not what it was believed. That being said, you may be happy with the same shafts I'm playing instead of X flex. Regardless, and as many have already mentioned, tipping doesn't do anything for distance it just changes the feel of the club.

Traditionally, tipping driver shafts is done to increase stiffness. It can also lower the torque a bit, but usually only a fraction of a degree. From your post above, launch is fine, but spin is way high. The Kiyoshi gold is a "high launch" shaft and would exacerbate the spin issue with a head set at 11*+. I would expect that setup to be prescribed to someone who has serious issues elevating their driver. At 118 CHS, that should not be a problem for you. I would expect that driver to feel somewhat "loose" for you and that you would have a lack of confidence in being able to control the head of the club through impact. Sound familiar?

To fix this, I would suggest getting something like a HZRDUS Black handcrafted 75 6.5 (online for around $100) or a UST Proforce V2 Black 7F5 (REALLY tight shaft that runs about $60 online) and starting out with no tipping. Set your Epic at 10.5 and see how it goes. If you feel you want them stiffer, then you can tip a bit.

Remember, good shafts don't have to be expensive. I have shafts that retail for up to $500, but they really don't perform any better than others that cost much less. The main thing is that the profile fits your swing. THAT will allow you to swing them comfortably and max out your speed while maintaining control.

Just for reference, I'm a bit below you in CHS (max out about 112) and played both the HZRDUS Black 75 6.0 and the Proforce V2 Black 75 S in an LTD Pro set at 10.5. I can swing them as hard as I want and never feel like I lose control of the clubhead. One important point, I have a very smooth transition which allows me to be comfortable with the S in these shafts.
