Spider Tour, Spider X, or Evnroll ER5

dejanomics

Recommended Posts

Looking to switch from my Ping Anser Milled 1 to a mallet for some more forgiveness on the greens. However, I want a mallet with some toe hang. I’ve tried both slant neck versions of the TM Spider Tour and Spider X and also tried Evnroll ER5 with gravity grip...having a tough time deciding so I figured I would go to the WRX group for your experiences with these putter. Any thoughts?

Of those listed I'd probably pick the Spider X based on testing in store. But I'd also look at the Ping Heppler Floki or Tyne 3 for other mallets with toe hang if you haven't already looked at them.

Compared to tour anser, the spiders will feel super soft and you'll have a hard time getting the ball to the hole unless you play on fast greens all the time. The evnroll will be firm like the anser off the face.

As for forgiveness, the spiders are 2 of the best. I feel like spider tour is more forgiving than x.

Have to disagree here. Super soft is those Odyssey putters. Spider X has a much firmer face.

Ummm, odyssey wasn't in his post and they weren't part of my comparison.

Umm I know they weren't. You said super soft. First thing that came to mind is the mushy inserts Odyssey has been releasing the past 2-3 years.

I’ve got both the Tour and the X and much prefer the X.  It’s firmer than the Tour and a much more manageable size, especially for someone coming from an Anser.

The paint on the Tour is awful and you won’t be happy with it.  The X does not have this issue, in my experience.  I’ve played 150+ rounds with mine and it still looks brand new.  The Tour didn’t last a week before the chipping started and I used the headcover religiously.

Have never gotten along with Evnroll, just don’t like the feel.

I would second this.  I love everything about the Spider X but the insert. I tried the Spider X for a few rounds, the Spider felt soft and I struggled getting the ball to the hole.  I thought I could work through it but after a couple rounds leaving putts short I went back to my Ping.  That being said I should know better, I have always struggled with insert putters.  I have only tired the ER5 in store and liked it, the other consideration is to get a Ping mallet made for a slight arc stroke.  I really liked the Heppler Ketsch.

The Evnroll will age better. The Spider putter paint is notoriously weak and will look like crap in a year. If you keep putters for a long time, I would choose the Evnroll for that reason alone.

The Spider Tour was what was weak. My Spider X has not chipped or had any paint issues in 2 seasons.

I would recommend either of the Spider options, having used the slant neck version of both (Spider Tour Black and X). X is definitely a touch firmer, but still soft - I actually enjoy the feeling because it feels like I can go after a putt more with an insert versus getting defensive with milled faces, but that's just my feeling. But as others have stated, paint on a TM putter CAN (not always) be an issue if that's something that bothers you. If not, both great putters imo.

I've gamed both the face balanced and short slant versions of Spider X.  I prefer the short slant version coming from decades of gaming Newport 2 versions.

One thing of note, is that ordering the 12g weights for the Spider X made it perfect for me.  IMO the stock option is a little light, I feel like I have more control with the 12g weights.   I will say this is all subjective.  I have not swing-weighted or weighed the differences; it's all just feel for me.

As for feel, Spider X is the first insert putter I have gamed that I enjoy (to be fair it's also my first TM putter).  I have experimented with just about every face technology that Odyssey has had over the years (original black, White Hot, RX insert, Microhinge, etc) and really struggled with distance control.  Always went back to my trusty Scotty's.  The TM insert is the first I feel as confident as solid stainless with.

Good luck on your quest.

I found this about the spider x, I struggle to get the putts to the hole compared to my milled putters so after trying for a month or two I switched back to my milled putters. Conversely I preferred the spider tour as a putter but the paint was horrendous.

Oldish thread but having gone to a Spider X directly from an Anser Milled putter, yes, the AM putter feels firmer as expected but the Spider X does not feel soft and I had no issues adjusting as far as distance control goes.  In fact, I find the Spider X to be VERY consistent distance-wise and it rolls the ball great.  I absolutely love this mallet.
