The Match III: Phil + Chuck vs Steph + Payton

The Match I was a great event and The Match II was even better. Now it looks like things are going downhill with The Match III. If you haven't heard, it will be Nov 27th, and the matchup will be Phil + Chuck vs Steph + Payton. I expect ratings to be WAY, WAY below the previous two events, here's why:

 

- TW moves the needle and taking him out of the event really hurts. Many non-golfers and golfers alike will skip the event for this reason.

- Uneven matchup. Even though Steph is around scratch, the matchup is a pro golfer + a terrible hacker vs a really good amateur golfer and an average amateur golfer. It's not a matchup of equals, kind of resembles a circus.

 

I REALLY HOPE that this thing doesn't bomb so bad that they cancel The Match going forward. If you put TW vs another pro golfer w/ some well-known sports amateurs, that's a formula for big success. It should be brought back out for The Match IV, even if this upcoming event is a joke.

I don’t know, I think it will be good fun.  I also think Peyton Manning is far better then an average amateur golfer.  Isn’t he mid single digit index? 
 

Also, it’s alternate shot.  Charles is sure to put Phil in some tough spots.

I do agree that it will be disappointing not to have Tiger involved.  The only explanation for his absence I can think of is that he doesn’t enjoy the wired-for-sound comedy routine. Tiger is all business on the course, maybe these things make him uncomfortable. Tiger not being a part of this can’t be the choice of the organizers.

Im a barkley fan but I cant watch him golf. He obviously has a mental block or even call it the full swing yips. But its cringe worthy to watch. To me its the same thing as deliberatly putting a guy with a clinical stuttering problem and force him to give a public speech for the world to see. Kudos for Barkely for still playing through his difficulties but why the need for a public spectacle.

Actually a good match up. CB will put Phil to the test with some crazy shots.
 

Let’s see how the chemistry is.

 

Peyton was actually surprisingly entertaining. I can see him and Steph playing “straight man” to Phil and CBs constant harassment.

 

Try to find the positive and not just the negative. That’s my motto these days.

It's on Thanksgiving weekend...so a lot of people will be available to watch. And its on a Friday, so you don't have college football or NFL to compete with. I don't think most people will tune in to see great golf...its just pure entertainment.

Disagree with the OP, this is going to be entertaining. Sure TW would be great but he's not necessary for success, plus he's a little light on personality. 

 

Phil = well known, amazing golfer, big personality and trash talker. 

 

Charles = horrible golfer but extremely funny, huge personality and entertaining. 

 

Peyton = I learned from watching his last match, good golfer and funny. 

 

Steph = great golfer, huge name in the sports world and good personality. 

 

I'll be watching. I hope they put cameras in the carts.

I would have preferred to have two PGA pros & 2 celebrities from other sports. Keeps it more golf-centric. Now it's just a ratings-generic-sports-grab. With that said, I'll probably still check it out.

Easy pass for me. Like the matches that included the Battle at Bighorn or whatever it was called, initially there was some interest but after a while that fizzled out. Looks like this ‘series’ is going the same way.

This is coming up tomorrow. On paper Phil + Chuck have almost no chance, the way I see it their default score will be bogey on most holes while Steph + Payton will mostly make pars. Payton was money last time except for some errant tee shots and now that doesn't even matter. The format strongly favors Steph + Payton. I have five figures on them.

 

Edit: I should mention the one wildcard would be if Chuck actually spent the last few months focusing on golf. The guy is a former professional athlete and could be a decent golfer if he really put time, energy, and mental into it, but so far he has not. I have an insider who saw Chuck swing lately and he tells me there's no improvement since spring. So I expect the same old chuck unfortunately (well not unfortunately for me because I have money on the other side).

I am STUNNED that the op doesn't like the impending made for tv golf event with three tremendous sports personalities, that do NOT include tiger woods, would be if any interest.
