The Match III: Phil + Chuck vs Steph + Payton

This staged program is not for everyone, but I thought Match 3 is highly entertaining.

Barkley and Phil made a good and fun team. The opposition needs a pro. Period.

Or drop the modified part. Just play a true alternate shot. When Charles knows they are going to be playing his ball, it’s going to get interesting.

Woof. Hope that 5 figure bet wasn’t a big deal for you. I know guys that bet 5 figures on the time it takes stoplights to turn green without real consequence in their life and others that borrow $9,997 on a credit card to place the bet. I hope you are the former.

Nothing but a chicken wing. I have TW at +3300 to win 2021 Masters, when that pays off it will pay for 20+ fun losing bets like this. With the way TW played the last six holes, +3300 is the easiest money ever made.

How did everyone not have Phil’s team as the favorite ?

Curry is likely a 4.  Anybody can be a plus 1 picking up putts and rolling the ball and playing with pals

Many “scratch golfers” have a game that only works on their home course playing with their normal group

I thought Phil and CB would get beat cause I had no idea Barkley had improved so much. He looked like he could break 100 easy with a mulligan or 2.

I think if the scores are accumulative for both players playing the full around..   Curry/Payton would have won..

Phil is known to get out of tight situations..

This was much better than Tyson vs. Jones Jr.  Hope Jake Owen doesn’t ask Iron Mike for his $49.99 back.

That's why they play 72 holes...long-shot at best, that's why the odds are 3300...

Phil might have been annoying, actually scratch that, he was definitely annoying, but he got what he needed out of Charles. He got reliable tee shots. Things might have gone very differently if Charles was left alone to whale away at driver off the tee. Keeping him focused on smooth tempo'd irons into the fairway settled his game very nicely.

I still felt like I watched a 3 hour playing lesson for Charles. It was tedious. I also felt the announcing strategy lacked. They could have used McCord a lot more to create some rhythm instead of just plowing forward with Phil's relentless instruction. I understand why some on here enjoyed that. It was informative. But it also got pretty tired pretty fast. At least that's my opinion.

I'm sure it's tough, though. Putting something like that on in real time makes it nearly impossible to accomplish any level of finesse. They could probably put out a much better product if they taped these things and then did some editing to combine the announcing talents of all involved, but who knows if you can even do that anymore. The outcome would leak long before they could televise the finished product.

It was a shame Steph and Peyton were both off their games like they were. There was no ham and egging going on for them. I think Steph gets a pass. He's been getting ready for the NBA season, I doubt he's been spending any time on his golf game. It showed with his short game shots.

Seemed like they had several tech issues which likely impacted their broadcast strategy. There was a point when Phil's team lost their earpiece feeds, and the mobile cameras and audio from the carts was usually spotty. They tried to do too much when they brought Chuck's announcing partners on all at once, each on a separate Zoom connection. It was annoying with all the over-talking, glitching etc. that comes from having too many people involved. It gives you an appreciation for the steady rhythm of a real golf telecast.

As far as Steph's handicap being bogus...I disagree. I think most people see their worst game when they're in alternate shot (definitely true at the Ryder Cup and elsewhere). He kept putting Peyton in greenside bunkers and PM wasn't handling those well, so after doing it 3 times it was probably really weighing on any approach SC tried for their team.

Another thing that can put pressure on your game is being four down after six holes. I'm sure none of us have been THERE!

You guys doubt Steph prepped for this broadcasted event?? Give me a break, it's typical super star sensationalism. Steph is a solid 1-3 cap, might not travel well on all types of courses. I don't care if he's not a PGA Tour golfer, your handicap is your handicap whether you are an NBA super star, lawyer, or Navy SEAL. Maybe he had an exceptionally bad day (just like on court the last few years wink wink)

I doubt he did much at all. I'm sure he is focused on basketball right now. The Warriors and his sponsors don't line his pockets to work on his golf game when basketball is the priority.  And he strikes me as a bright guy who has his priorities in order.

In my opinion, if this was held in a typical NBA offseason when he is relaxing and playing a lot of golf, you would have gotten the guy that nearly shot even par over 36 holes in a web.com event, instead of the guy whose been riddled with injuries, is finally healthy again, and is probably very driven to have an exceptional basketball season. That season starts shortly after the middle of December.

No sensationalism here, just perfectly acceptable rational inference.

Wait - when did he nearly shoot even par over 36 in a web event?

Not bad, but I think repeating the word "erase" is a no-no.

I'm pretty sure "poppy" would count as a seasonal word, so that's good. Also, poppy season is sort of around now, isn't it?
