Curious what other people think about in their pre-shot routine.

Changes constantly since I am working on a swing change...
 

Right now I want to have my right palm pointed straight behind me when my left arm is parallel to the ground on the backswing.

My only active swing thought after I set up is push left hand and shoulder straight back and control club w/left hand.

 

However, my setup is very meticulous, I point my legs at the target and make sure to keep them "ready to go" and my arms are in a forward press postion from the get-go. Tony Finau sets up like this sometimes. It really helps me get my hands and arms in a good postion early, so much so that I can do half swings like Finau and generate good speed. I had been struggling to try to understand how to find the "slot" in my swing that enables me to feel like my hands and arms are really connected coming down through impact that lets me swing really hard and hit it straight w/o worrying about timing and setting the hands in the forward press postion really helped me yeasterday at the range.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Seriously, after sit up, i'm just swinging easy and going for the ride. It relaxes me and counters my life long battle with tension in my swing. Been hitting a lot more straight and consistent lately with very few FAT misses.

I'm working on my swing quite a bit right now.  At present during set up i make sure that my upper arms sit forward of my lats, biceps against my chest.  On a lesson using video i notice i did get my arms forward of may lats at times, causing a bit of elbow flex (i have a wide back for my size, due to gym training), this always caused bad shots.  Since getting my arms forward, i can get my forearms closer together in set up.  Once im ready to go, its 'Rotate hard' and feel right palm face the sky as long as possible in the downswing.

 

This has revolutionised my iron play in a coulple of weeks.  Its stopped my flip, brought my flight down, picked up 10-15 yards that i was losing due to how high i was hitting the ball, pretty much eliminated my hook and everything feels so connected and effortless i dont know what i was doing before, but i'm not sure it resembled a golf swing.

 

Fairways are pretty solid, but not where they need to be right now and i havent translated this to my driver well just yet.  But for now, getting my 4iron back over 200 yards consistently has made my life much easier.

I just focus on where I want my ball to go, keep my head down and mentally go blank, and wait for the clubhead to tell my hands what happened.

My takeaway. If I get lazy with my hips (or get too quick with the transition); I tend to get chunky or fade happy.

I usually have trouble with tempo. So my swing thoughts are:

 

50 yards less than my intended distance - this allows me to swing instead of hit and makes me relax over the ball. Say driver, I would tell myself before I swing away, 190 yards is all I need. 

 

1 and 2 - I count in my head for my back swing and slight pause at the top, to ensure a smooth transition. Before I swing away, I tell myself, count 1 and 2.

My swing thought is to start downswing by thrusting down into the ground with my legs and pushing back up.  Let my arms drop into the slot and just let the magic happen.  Pretty much the squat move that Rory, Wolff and several others on tour do for power.  Ironically, I've been doing this long before George Gankus made it popular.

Not so much swing thoughts but semi-conscious reminders.

 

As I set up I think "Balance, swing plane, head back, weight forward" and then pull the trigger.

 

I will change slightly on occasion. Recently I fell into a really old bad habit of bending over too far and was chunking too many shots so right now "Upright/balance" is my last reminder.

I think about address technique (grip-posture-alignment) but have no "in swing" thoughts.

My belief is that if address technique is fundamentally sound then so too will be the swing.

I know what you're thinking. "Will you be inside or outside?" Well, to tell you the truth, in this long round I kind of lose track myself. But being as this is a Hogan Precision, the most powerful iron in the world and  would blow your bogeys clean off the card, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Will you commit to striking from the inside?" Well, will ya, punk?

The few Rare rounds in the past when I hit almost every fairways and green I had no body swing thoughts.  I remember feeling confident where the ball would land , remember the anticipated ball flight    I think the only mechanical thought before I setup  was making sure the clubhead/clubface closes through the ball.  Annika teaches a think box.  I like that analogy. I have my swing thoughts before I pick up the club and set up
