Hypothetical question (that may or may not have happened last week): If you saw something for sale on the BST and you KNEW that the listing contained some false info, but you have no dog in the fight, would you get involved?

Let's pretend someone listed a putter on the BST.  Let's also pretend that the seller posted a price that indicated it was a custom putter and as such he had paid a premium price for it.  And to take the hypothetical situation further, let's pretend that even when someone questioned his previous statement, he doubled down and insisted that he had paid more than his asking price for it.

Now let's pretend that a quick search in another forum brings up a posting from earlier this year in which the same WRX member brags about getting a great deal on this seemingly same exact putter, claiming to have paid half of what he is now asking for it...

If it were me, I would REALLY want to stick my nose in this and call this out, but my better judgement (my wife) thinks I should stay out of it since I have no interest in the putter and have never had any interaction with the seller.  But part of me wants to protect the integrity of the BST... what would you guys do?

The trivial claims of "custom" or "tour issue" or "belonged to XXXX" without proof, kind of should be taken as hearsay unless proved otherwise.  So just boils down to the club at hand and ultimately its still up to the seller to pick a price, and a prospective buyer to pay it, same as any transaction.

Hard answer but what I would say is, do your "due diligence" on sellers for this exact reason.  The reality is, someone will pay the premium if they want the item and there is nothing you can do about it.  I agree with you, its a bad look and would prompt me to avoid that specific seller 100%.  Scummy.

Thats correct, I wouldnt stick my nose in it. Many on here claim custom and it is up to the buyer to ask every question he needs to feel assure on what he is purchasing. Not for other members to jump on another member for either price or description is what I read in the rules. Even when I post things for sale, I always say ask me any questions if the pictures or details arent clear enough. Often times people say clubs are standard length and they end up either upright by couple of degrees or even flat by a couple of degrees. Now with the description of the item, that is all the seller trying to upsell the item it sounds like. Now if you know he is selling counterfeit stuff, then that to me would be something that needs to be said.

I think that your desire to maintain standards on the BST is noble and one that I support, but in situations like this, I think sticking your nose in has the potential to cause more problems than it solves.

Unless you are a Marshall or have some kind of authority, how does the buyer know to trust you?

On a larger scale, this is the inherent problem with luxury or specialty goods like Tour Issue golf clubs and designer purses.

Ultimately, the buyer is not buying something for use-value. They are buying for cache-value. One is relatively easy to police, the other is always going to be a crap shoot.

I'd stay out of it.  If seller got a good deal on an item and is selling for more than they bought it, there's nothing inherently wrong or 'scummy' about that.  If I was sure a seller had out right lied to me in a reply, then I'd make a note to not deal with that particular person, but unless we're talking counterfeit goods or similar then I don't see the need to 'protect the field' in this situation.

I’d walk away and not stir the pot. Value/want/need will depict what it sales for in the end , no matter what he paid for it.
Was there an additional cost in maybe a BGT shaft and or a premium grip between sales that might “somewhat” give justification?
