Shaft Recommendations - self-fitting

BlackOut2

Recommended Posts

I have had a couple trackman lessons, and am hoping I can utilize my findings to have you fine folks give me some shaft recommendations. My current driver is the Callaway Rogue Draw with an Aldila NV 55s shaft. Swing speed averages around 95 mph, tops out at 100. My club path is neutral to slightly out to in, with an average angle of attack of +1.  My club face miss is towards the heel, and obviously the right side of the fairway. When I struggle with the slice, it is usually due to not closing the clubface.

I feel like my drives are spinning far to much. My best drives have a spin rate of 3000, but am averaging closer to 3400. This plays out on the course, and my drives balloon and fall out of the sky. The result is a lack of distance. I am  averaging about 205 carry, 225 total. My average smash factor isn't horrible

With this data in mind, I would appreciate some shaft recommendations for me to try!

Your spin problem is because you are striking it on the heel. You don't say hi or low, but in all likelihood low.

What you need to do is find a shaft (length and weight) that will give you better strike characteristics.

I'd check Howard's DIY fitting guide for some guidance on what to try.

Sure, that definitely contributes, but even on my center hits I am still getting that high of spin. Would you be so kind to point me in the direction of that guide?

High spin comes from the swing, rarely is the shaft either the cause or the solution.   If it's not face impact position, it's from delivering a high dynamic loft into impact  (hands too far behind the ball at impact and too much backward shaft lean).   Lots of causes but one common one is trying to force a positive AoA without the proper instruction.   If you've been on Trackman, pay attention to the dynamic loft or spin loft numbers.

Follow Howard's fitting tutorial.  If there is still an issue after that, the more effective solution is to go to a lower loft in the head.

As Stuart and others point out, don't go chasing a shaft for spin. The Rogue when struck well is not a high spin club overall.

I worked this year on improving my path and strike and with LM data consistently saw higher spin numbers with the rogue and even a rogue SZ as I rebuilt my swing to get away from a bad flaw that presented a slightly open face, higher dynamic loft at impact.

Launched in the proper window with better delivery, Rogue delivers low and mid 2000' spin rates easily.  My SS is a few MPH higher but still in the ball park.

FWIW I also gamed 4 different shafts with the rogue just experimenting shaft feel and dispersion and every single one of them  I could produce 3000+ spinny drives due to my flaw just the same. The LM data was too honest that way 🙂

While my average dynamic loft is a bit high, even on those where I am in the proper window I am spinning it in the mid 3000s. My spin loft seems to be in the proper window based on trackmans averages.

That's not how to use those averages.  They are not targets and it really doesn't mean anything that you might be close for some of them.

Only four things contribute to spin on a driver:

1) spin loft (dynamic loft - AoA)

2) face-to-path

3) gear effect based on face impact location, head c.g. and MOI.

3) ball used.

Even if the shaft is contributing, it does so by altering the dynamic loft so you'd still see the contribution from the shaft it in those dynamic loft numbers.    Which one(s) are contributing to your results is impossible for anyone else to say without seeing all the numbers.

Fair enough, thanks for the response. I have also been exploring the idea of changing balls, but that is a whole 'nother conversation.
