4 iron Standard Vs 4 driving iron

Hi there. Just bought myself a set of cobra king forged from the 5 to the pw. I’d like to add also the 4 iron but not really sure whether to get the standard set iron or the driving iron. What are the differences?

I originally put a U85 4 iron in play instead of the 4 iron in my John Letters MM Forged Cavity set and the difference was astounding - higher ball flight, more distance, bigger yardage gap to my 5 iron. I have never used any other driving irons, so I can't give you a more general idea of what to expect though.

IMO, a 5 driving iron will be closer to the gap you need to fill.

 

I went with a 24º hybrid to replace my 4 iron yardage. Much easier to hit.

Assuming that the 4i and 4u shapes are similar to the 3 there are two differences.

 

The most obvious one is that the utility has the adjustable hosel. The second is that the two irons have different sole widths. The utility is about 5mm wider across the entire width of the sole than the iron.

I played the older iteration of the King Utility (3) and couldn't get the damn thing to stop whistling on my downswing without plugging up the hole in the hosel where you adjust the loft.

 

Sounded like throwing one of those whistling Vortex footballs every downswing.

 

Performance wise it was fine though!  Blended well with my Cobra Forged Tour set it terms of looks/distance/etc.

I've got my set 4 iron and a GAPR mid 4 in the bag. The GAPR is about 15-20 longer off the tee.

I play small traditional shaped blades with very little offset and just ordered a cb with 1.5mm more offset and slightly larger head(hopefully not too big) to use off the tee for the short par 4's. I remember when I started playing golf in the 90's that there was more than one pga player playing small blades except for the 2 and 3 irons, which were like Ping Eye 2's, which had a lot of offset compared to the blades.
