How many birdies in a season?

I have 10 HIO in total. Six of those have come in the last three years, 2 in 2018, 2 in 2019 and 2 this year. The first one dates back to 1984. I am a firm believer that HIO are as much, if not more about luck than skill.

No doubt there's an element of luck involved with a hole in one. The fact that you have TEN suggests you've put the ball in a good position way more often than not unless you've bounced them all off trees, cart paths, etc. and if that's the case, we need to talk Lotto numbers soon.

My first HIO was among the worst shots I hit that day. I took too much club, skulled it, it never got higher than the flagstick, hit the front of the green and rolled over a ridge directly at the flagstick set in a bowl. Never saw it go in. Other than that one, all the others were legitimately good shots that all landed on the green, no trees, cart paths, boulders......😄

I have no idea of how many birdies I have made this year. My stats said I birdied 21% in my rounds, I guess it comes to 3.78 birdies per round. Current handicap of +1.5. I did make 12 birdies in 36 holes in my club championship that I won with 70-68. I did have couple rounds with no birdies. My biggest strength is hitting lot of fairways with a driver that I have gained about 10-15 yards over my previous driver, then hitting more greens with better chances for birdies.

I've always thought more birdies chances can come from trying to hit longer drives in the play as it sets up easier approaches into the greens.

I do keep track of all my pars and birdies. I have played 60 rounds between June-October and have 58 birdies, so 0.96 per round. I definitely don’t get a birdie every single round but the best round I played had 5 birdies.

HIO - only 2 in the 4 years I have been playing. One in 2017, the other in 2018. I had high hopes of getting one this year but it didn’t happen.  My hcp is 5.2.

I've tracked pretty much all of my rounds this year and it's currently showing I've played 33 rounds. I'm sure there are a couple of others (especially 9 hole rounds) that didn't get recorded, and I've had 37 birdies, so the actuality is probably slightly less than one per round played. I keep a list of every birdie I make each season; I've never broken 50 for the year, and as it's getting late in the season it doesn't look like I'm going to this year either.

Normally do 100 rounds / year with 2 birdies a round for the last few years. This year because of Covid and now a baby I played less but got my index down to the lowest I've ever been, perfect timing... also still haven't had a hole in one

2020 HC 1-4 index - 51 rounds, 107 birdies, 5 eagles

Course has One driveable par 4 (hit the green about 40%), (only two par 5's) one reachable par 5, the other none reachable par 5 has my third most birdies per hole usually with less than 100 on my third shot.

2017 it took until December to birdie every hole, superscore -18

2018 it took until December to birdie every hole, superscore -20, one of the eagles was a hole out from 185

2019 it took until October to birdie every hole, superscore -20

2020 it took until 7/17 to birdie every hole, superscore -20

I don't keep stats for exactly how many birdies I made but I have a rough average of 2.4 (rounded) birdies per round. Maybe going a little more in depth with my stat tracking would do me some good.

My index is the same as the OP at 5.5.  Looking at my golf Canada stats, my last 20 rounds have netted 30 birdies.  The thing is, I don't always enter my scores hole by hole so this number may be low.  I would have guessed that I make about 2-3 birdies per round on average.  I've made up to 7 birdies in a round but also, maybe every 3rd or 4th round I don't get any but usually I birdie 1-3 par 5's and grab another on a 3 or 4.

It's funny that we have the same handicap with such a difference.  I lose a lot of shots punching out.  My course is such that a missed fairway often means punching out and in many cases just being on the wrong 1/2 of a fairway means your blocked out due to big overhanging trees.  Couple that with tiny greens and long rough and you have a lot of bogies.  My course is short at 6700 from the tips so if I'm diving well I can make birdies.

It's not uncommon for me to go several holes in a row without a par.  looking at the numbers for the last 20 rounds:

birdies = 8.8%

Pars = 52.3%

Bogies = 30.1%

Doubles = 8.8%

No eagles netted in my last 20 😞

Responding primarily to the bolded text above, yeah it's crazy, but this is kinda what I was looking for by making this post. My bet is I probably make up the difference by maybe getting more pars than you do? Maybe less bogeys? My friends have said that I have a "boring game", and make a lot of pars because I am not as aggressive as they are. I always reply with the David Simms comment about pars: "I'll take 18 of 'em, all day long!"

Not only did I want to see how I fare against similar handicaps, I was curious how many less birdies I make than better golfers. One guy posted earlier that he averages almost 4 birdies per round. My thought was "man, I'd be on cloud nine if I averaged 4 birds a round".

I don't keep detailed stats any longer, but a round without a couple birdies is what we call a 'drought'.  I'd say average 2-3 birdies a round, rarely droughted but it does happen.  Conversely, sometimes as many as 5 or 6 in a round.

As HIO came up, I have 3, all well struck shots, first one I actually called ala Babe Ruth.

I actually track that too - the "superscore" on all the courses I played. I actually was able to pull off birdie or better on every hole on my home course this season. I had one hole left to go, hole 11, until about a month ago. It's not a hard hole, but I can never seem to get the putt read right so I was always missing the birdie tries.

I managed a superscore of 51 on my home course for the 2020 season. Three eagles in one season, which is a record for me.

Never thought to track the nightmare round, might have to add that. Played a few worst ball scrambles with myself which is an eye opening experience.

was looking at my old scorecards from my 4 crazy low rounds last year and I saw in my 70 I had seven birdies !

this was the crazy round where I made 2 on all the par 3's and 3 of them were inside 2.5 feet

I think my record is 7 birdies and an eagle in one round, where I won the university tournament .. Al Bundy moment.  I have never had more than 7 in a round if memory serves and my PB is 68.  Never gone lower, even with starts of 4 under thru 6 etc

I do recall a crazy round 5 years back where I made 6 birdies on the front 9 and didn't break 80

So far, 112 in 120 rounds. Would like more of course but considering I started this year having not been able to play for nearly 5 months because of a left knee injury and then 8 weeks off with the first lockdown having just started to gain confidence then I’m pretty happy with that. Hopefully I’ll get more next year if I can learn how to hit a driver again, post injury.
