There is nothing I hate more about the Internet than when someone posts something and says: "Discuss."

Was it this guy?

The 80% thing is, in my opinion, overused and misleading. No one actually swung at 80% speed.  Unless you think Jack was capable of swinging 140 or so and chose 112 instead? It may have “felt like” 80

No more Jeff Slumans, Justin Leonards, or Corey Pavins winning majors ever again.  Even the pipsqueaks hit it far, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler.  Even though Fowler is just making a living and not making history.

Haney has probably done more damage to the game of golf than any other person . For example, he wrecked Tiger's swing, he told his Sirius Radio viewers to putt from 30 yards off the green, he rambles on nonsensically about how "distance is everything" etc...

Yep...and it's not limited by age. The best player in my skins league is a legit scratch handicap. I think he's 70 or 71? Not sure, but he's been retired for awhile. He hits the s*** out of the ball. Easily the longest guy in our whole group. I was testing the new BB B21 on the range and he came over and wanted to hit it. The range has a fence at 270. He was hitting it 35-45 yards past the fence...CARRY...every time. We all sat there just amazed. Dude is on Medicare and SS and he's making all the young guys look short. Not surprisingly, he posts the lowest scores every week. Although, due to handicap, struggles to actually win any money....which if you ask him about, you will get an earful. LOL.

Yeah in a different era Leonard might still be playing instead of commentating in the booth. The guys who didn't harness the distance advantages of the new equipment were made obsolete fast.

Or Nick Faldos, Gary Players, Johnnie Millers.

Fairways hit was one an absolute essential for a golf pro,  even for a bomber like Jack.

Now, fairways hit is completely meaningless.

Is it golf?

Or something else?

You cannot stop people getting fitter, working harder and better conditioned courses. The game has moved on like every other sport and technology. 30 years ago a family car in the UK had 125 bhp from 2 litres. Now you can have 200 bhp from a 1.4 litre car. The issue is that Golf is going to become closer to Tennis where being tall is a necessity.

I think this was pretty clear after a couple of Tiger years

Well you have a lot of people to this day reciting post after post where they say stuff like "there'll always be a place for the guy with the wedge game who can putt".

I think a relevant question is(and I am asking a question not making a judgment as I don't know the answer) is how long any of these guys were in relation to their peers? How they compare to the distances of todays pros is meaningless to me its judging how they stacked up against their competition.
