Unfortunately there are a lot of people with no class yet still have a couple of bucks in their pockets.  They come to a golf course and act like no one else matters because they paid their fee in the shop.

Bravo for brevity sir.  You just summed it all up in two tight sentences.  THIS ^^^ is the root of the problem.

My big things are pace of play and treat the course and people respectfully. That and learn very basic rules. I was at the course closest to my house a while back and there were a couple of younger guys playing. I remember specifically on one hole while waiting for the group in front of me hearing a shout, then watching a ball roll off the green and seeing one of the guys get in his cart and drive on the green! Then as they are teeing off on the next hole, which was running adjacent to mine, I hear another shout. I figured they hit a bad shot, which they did, but right towards me. Because they had just shouted a noise instead of fore I just stood there and the ball landed pretty close to me, not close enough to put me in danger, but well within the close enough to chew them out range. I should have said something, but I didn't.

In regards to ball marks I have been working on repairing others as well. I don't make one that often, they are increasing in frequency at least, so it's kind of a little mark of pride that I get to repair mine.

As far as clothing, wear what you want as long as it's respectful of others.

Good points up above, the growth in popularity has made getting a tee time quite difficult here in Perth West Oz. I used to be able to get a quick 9 Sunday afternoon quite easily in one of our metropolitan golfs, but they have all become way too crowded.

And yeah, too many very casual golfers only here for a good time regardless of pace of play or etiquette, it's tough. I don't have the luxury to spend 2.5hrs for a lazy 9 holes unfortunately.

I thought the punchline to the title was going to be "get off my effing lawn!"

But seriously, I agree that a starter course on etiquette is a good idea for new golfers. It's kind of part of etiquette but I think my highest priority for new golfers is safety, both theirs and others.

I took a friend to play his first round of golf and he almost beaned me a few times. He also wandered down the wrong fairway a couple of times without looking and nearly got hit himself. Took an emergency crash course to get us through the round.

Slow play is annoying but has always been with us. Music playing from carts is now widespread and most bothersome. Ruins others aesthetic enjoyment of the game.

All the slow play is causing the need for music. If I have to wait 10 minutes on every shot a little music can make it more tolerable. Eliminate slow play and the music will be much less.

Golf isn't really growing, this year more people played but for one very specific reason that won't last forever.

I've been on the site for 10+ years now and people have been saying this for as long as i've been on this site. I'm sure they said it long before that. I doubt etiquette at public courses has ever really been good. Private courses it tends to be a lot better.

It's not only unique to golf. Play in an adult men's basketball or flag football league and see how long it takes you to get stabbed.

A lot of times people blame various groups, like kids these days etc. To me the most selfish group has and always will be the 30-55yr old men who comprise a lot of the players. Many great guys in this group obviously, but also many who are just mad all the time over their job, their marriage etc...And no one is going to tell them what to do on the golf course. Again this is not unique to golf. When you are involved in a road rage incident it's rarely 17yr old girls or 75yr old men

I agree 2020 is a temporary boost to golf and other outdoor activities, but that may largely wane in the next couple years.  But one of the most disturbing things that 2020 has taught me, is that the sense of entitlement and selfish lack of caring of how ones behavior can adversely impact others has never been so clearly widespread--- and that starts well before 30 and extends well beyond 55 and spreads amongst men and women.

Ultimately, this will moderate itself.

Those that are new to the game and stick with it will learn the basics. Others will leave the game.

Sure, the nature of the game will evolve. Perhaps more relaxed dress, more tolerance for things done on course that weren't done before. But the basics of etiquette will eventually be learned.

I started playing in about 1990, worked the bagroom at a local private club when I was 14. Aside from the music, every issue you brought up were points if contention then as well, plus several others that are still talked about today - cigarette butts, slow play, hats on backwards, shirts tucked in. There will always be a few people stuck on being pretentious, and there will always be a few determined to piss them off. The rest of us reside in a world where we don’t care about either of them.

I worked in a bag room at a semi-private and had a similar experience.  We don't have as many butts but we still have plenty of asses out there.

A couple of easy rules that should be posted at all golf shops:

  • Pace of play guidelines, pick up at double par, ready golf, ball search limit to 3 minutes
  • Fix your ball mark and then one more on every green (I still do this), sand divots
  • Keep music down (I have several players in my group that do this and I have found it to be enjoyable. I also share their taste in music).
  • Basic cart etiquette

I play at a medium end facility that has the rangers share etiquette when appropriate. The course has a responsibility to protect the golfing experience and golf ambassadors with reasonable people skills typically can present expectations in a positive way that are teachable moments versus coming off as shaming or embarrassing.

So glad music from carts is still frowned upon in the UK. If you want music go to an aerobics studio. I golf for relaxation, not to hear the top 100. As for the new breed coming into the game....some will stay and learn, the rest will find a new fad. Once Association Football comes back to fans in the grounds our course will get less hammer.
