Driver sim numbers don’t add up? Help!

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a new 9 deg Callaway Mavrik SZ with Hzrdus smoke 6.0 shaft. Went to a Foresight simulator to give it a few hits and no matter what I did I could not get efficiencies above 1.36. I was smashing this thing and loved the feel so I’m excited to get it out on the course but my numbers just didn’t make sense to me, or maybe I’m way out of line with this set up.

Avg SS - 111 mph

Avg launch - 12-13 deg

Avg ball speed - 148 mph

Avg spin - 3300 ish

Avg carry - 240

Avg total - 260

felt like I was smashing this too. Tried my old driver just to see (M1 hzrdus black 6.0 8.5 deg) and the numbers were lower in all categories except spin which was about the same. Nothing I could do would increase smash and anytime I tried to flatten angle of attack or even move it higher, my launch started going way too high.

any thoughts? I’m going to get fit, just haven’t had the time or geographical availability...

thanks all

Completely ignore those numbers until you can hit it on an actual launch monitor.  Most bargain simulators are completely useless for providing actual ball data and are more for fun

I'd ignore the numbers and get it out on the course and see how it performs.  That's where it really matters.  Hope it's a great driver for you.

Are you sure you hit this thing dead center?  With your swing speed, you should get at least 160 MPH ball speed.

Yeah, something's not quite right... I top out around 105mph but can get to 158ish ball speed, my spin is a lot lower but can carry 280. Efficiency does seem way low. Hopefully it's a launch monitor thing and not a driver thing, if you experience wildly different results on the course/at the range I'd discard those numbers. With your swing speed you might be better suited to an X flex/6.5 shaft too. You're probably close enough to play whatever is comfortable for you but something stiffer might help you drop that spin, especially if you're already in a low/low shaft and still spinning 3300.

It could be the golf ball too - if you were hitting garbage range balls in the simulator that could be the culprit. Range ball against TP5x was 8-10mph of ball speed difference for me. I was warming up with the range ball and feeling good by the time I went to TP5x in the simulator, to be fair, but it could be the cause of your low efficiency.

Which Forsight LM?   If it was the GC2 and didn't have HMT, then it's not measuring club head speed so the smash factor is assumed based on the club you tell it your hitting.   In that case the only thing you should pay attention to is the ball speed numbers.  Ignore club and smash.   At 1.36 it probably thought you were hitting a mid iron.

I think it's the same for GC Hawk.    Only GCQuad and GC2 w/ HMT measure club data.  And even then you need the stickers on the face to get accurate numbers.

Use foot powder spray to check your face impact location.  If it's a bit low on the face, that might be giving you more spin than you need.

The last time I was on a GC2, the iron preset was 1.36 and the driver was 1.48.  Since the Foresight just measures ball speed and uses the preset calculation to get clubhead speed, then your clubhead speed if probably closer to 100mph.  Assuming you are making good contact and getting a decent smash factor number.

As others mentioned on gc2 the smash is predetermined and calculates club speed based on the ball speed. 1.36 is a typical iron setting as 1.45 is used for drivers usually. If this is the case your ball speed was accurate but the club head speed is inflated, in reality it would more around 102-105mph. Did you happen to see fluctuating smash numbers or were they all 1.36?

foresight is a launch monitor and the gold standard for indoor units. nothing bargain about 5k+ units

as others have said the ball speed is probably correct and then it uses a preset smash factor to calculate CHS.

Thanks all, actually got on a track man today because I was so f——- up with the numbers lol. SS was 108-109 and I saw pretty different numbers.  Ball speed was closer to 156-157. Spin was closer to 2800, AoA was about .5 down and Efficiency was 1.46ish.

Im wondering like some of you mentioned if there may have been a preset I didn’t know about on the foresight. Numbers were what I would have expected on course. 275-280 total is me normally. Gonna work on AoA and speed and see if we can get a few more there. Appreciate all the insight!

The other guys above nailed it with regards to the preset smash factor issue, and these Trackman numbers certainly line up better. 1.46ish is still a bit low in terms of efficiency though, and the ball speed + spin combined with that definitely suggests a strike related issue. I would focus on that before AoA as unless your strike location simultaneously improves along with an AoA change, your efficiency will not likely improve. The Mavrik SZ is a pretty unforgiving driver, especially if the weight is forward, so strike is going to be king for performance.

You mean he edited the post to add the foresight reference after you responded? (It happens all the time).    That's one reason it can be helpful to quote the post you're responding to.
