Two iron fittings, two results

For the last number of years I have been playing Epon irons fitted with Recoil Prototype F4 shafts.  This past summer, I had to admit that as I am getting older (mid-60s) and my 7 iron club head speed had dropped to 82 mph, that I should at least consider new irons for the 2021 season.  I thought it would be better to have a fitting in the fall, while I am still playing, rather than wait until spring when my swing has been dormant for a few months.  I went to a fitter in the NYC area, that has a Trackman, for an iron fitting.  The results were either the Epon 706 with Oban Oi93 shafts or the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro with the same shaft.  Since I have months to think about it I decided to wait.  Today I went to local fitter, who uses the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer and an indoor simulator, and was recommended, in the Mizuno line-up, either the JPX HMP or the MP20 HMB, both with KBS C-Taper 120g shafts.  Again, since I have all winter to make a decision, I didn't place an order.

Now I'm really confused.  Based on my internet research, these two shafts couldn't be much more different.  The Oban Oi93s being a light weight, mid-high launch shaft and the C-Tapers 120g shafts being low launch and 30 grams heavier. Both fitters, while having different tools to use, I think are good fitters, and the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer, spit out the recommendations.

Is there anyway to reconcile the difference?  Should I go back more fittings?  Go to a third fitter?

Thanks

The Mizuno Shaft optimizer is designed to fit you into the best shaft that Mizuno offers, while ignoring the fitting experience that your "fitter" has. It's great for a "free" fitting, but will lack the depth and understanding of a professional fitting.

Whichever fitter will stand behind the performance of the clubs they recommend, is who I would go with. Mizuno isn't going to guarantee performance, so hopefully your first fitter will guarantee their performance.

@hunterdog If you go to TT site and use their shaft fitting tool, I bet you get something that makes the decision even more confusing. LOL

Yep, those two shafts, graphite vs. steel, Parallel vs Taper-tip, are very different.  For that reason, I would tend NOT to trust either.  I suspect the fitter that gave you graphite lite shafts factored in your age, while Mizuno Optimizer couldn't do that.  Also OEM's per-determined certain shafts for certain heads, leaving choices to fitter.  Which may depend on your tempo and mechanics; those made all the difference for me.

FYI, self-fit and 70yrs old playing PX 5.5 (S) which is 115g and have a set of Steelfiber i110cw "S" in another set of irons.  I tried lite graphite Steelfiber i95cw "S" and got a natural baby fade.  Went to i110cw "S" and fade disappeared and they fit my tempo much better; went to PX 5.5 even better, ball goes straight, but left or right when I want to work the ball.

If your whole reason for getting fit was based on slowing swing speed, I am not sure I would ever go back up in weight especially into the 120 gram range.

Not that I am saying the Oban shaft is the only option, but it does not make sense to move into that much heavier shafts as we get older. 10g maybe, but not 30g. I know there are always exceptions but I feel pretty good with this rule of thumb.

They are Not so different that a good player can’t hit both. Just a matter of if u can swing 120 grams over the course of the round.

go with graphite, they will age better

With respect to how you're trying to do your due diligence and make an informed choice here, you haven't said a word about how any of this stuff felt to you. I mention that because this reads a bit like you're looking for a computer/fitter to make the decision for you and that can be a flip of a coin that is not weighted in your favor. Maybe I am misunderstanding the process you're going through here, but did you actually swing the Oban shafts? I agree with Adam in that going up in shaft weight doesn't seem very logical, but we also don't know which Recoil Proto F4 shafts you were gaming to start with, so a little more info in these areas would be helpful.

I did hit the JPX HMP and Epon 706s with the Oban shafts.  They felt fine.  I did have a little trouble cutting a shot with them but since I typically play clubs with 2 flat so I wasn’t surprised.  My current shafts are the Recoil Prototype 93gr f4.  Both the 706s and the HMPs were longer than my current Epon 503s but comparatively, based upon loft, they should be. Honestly, I wanted to hit the HMP with a shaft that was not so expensive or a maybe  a stock shaft that gave similar performance.  I was surprised by the difference in suggested shafts and weights.
