Best Vest For Cold Weather?

Z1ggy16

Recommended Posts

I know there's topics on jackets and zip ups, but I'm talking specifically vests. I have a UA zip up that just doesn't fit me great and I'm thinking a vest + warmer long sleeve shirt might give me a bit more mobility. I'm looking at some Peter Millar vests and also Lulu Lemon. Are there any other high quality stretchy vests out there?

Nice, good find. How cold do you use it in? Usually I won't play under 40*F but 45 and sunny you will probably find me on the course or hitting balls on the range.

I've used in 5*C with wind and with a couple of layers underneath. I bought a smaller size. It allows for layers and sits fairly snug against my chest. I find that without sleeves my range of motion was not severely impacted. It's super light and doesn't feel like it's built to last but so far so good. I was worried that carrying would cause it rip or tear, but i've been lucky through a handful of carrying rounds.

Yeah guess it depends how long an expensive Peter Millar would last compared to this. My bag has pretty decent straps so hopefully it would rub too much or cut it like you said.

What base layers do you use? I was thinking of a Merino "workout" style long sleeve base layer... could even wear normal polo over it if it was windy out.

Nothing fancy. A long sleeve compression top, regular golf shirt, and then a light weight pullover from new balance or a heavier weight one from UA. Shed the vest or pullover as needed.

depends if you're walking or riding ... i walk, and regardless of temp, the most i'll wear is a compression heat thing from UA/Nike/etc, plus a vest ... i walk if the course is open, which is 30 F or a bit higher if on bent greens ... doesn't have to be a fancy this or that ... plenty of warmth after 2 holes or so (fat and short is a better shot than thin and long!) ... but, again, if you're riding, then that's a different ballgame ...

So I really like the under armour storm vest. I usually wear it over a nike element sphere half zip or my mizuno windlite sweater for moderate temps. However when its really cold, its slim enough to wear under my sunice hamilton jacket. No it's not a puffy vest, but I really like the versatility of being able to wear it as an outer layer or an internal layering piece.

I've never tried one of the heated vests; it is an interesting idea.

I several vests, and like them all; the warmest by far is a Columbia fleece vest I bought a couple of years ago.  It's almost TOO warm; I can wear it as outerwear, but underneath even a windshirt, it's just too hot.  Remarkable, really.

Yes, this is the one I have. It has been awesome.

Chilidog - I know you are in the industry and I follow your recommendations often.

Have you tried others - or were you one and done with this purchase.  If so - I assume that you did your due diligence to pick the proper one.

Also, it says that you should order up a size.  Do you agree with this statement?  For reference - I'm 5'10 and weight 150.  Thinking about going large as I will have a bit of bulk underneath.

Thoughts? - and thanks in advance !

Hey and yes, I did do some research. The technology is basically all the same from the $100 to the $40 ones. I was mostly interested in the zippers and the stitching. The navy one has worse zippers but I haven’t had any problems with it so far. If you want to spend $100 for the five zone heating I wouldn’t stop you. I live in NC in a mild climate so the 3 zone heating is plenty.

As far as sizing, just go up one size from your normal sizing. I’m normally a size L and an XL fits perfectly. I hope that helps.

From the time I turn the vest on to when I have turned it off I've gone about 5 hours with no issues, plenty of time to complete my round, usually at the "high" setting. They claim up to 10 hours on a fully charged battery but I've never tested it. I've also seen estimates of 6-8 hours. It gets warm but not hot if that makes sense. The claim is Low 100 degrees, Medium 120 and high 130 degrees. Depending on how many layers you have underneath it, it will affect how warm it feels to you.

FWIW, I got this when it was insanely marked down last December for only $50.  https://ping.com/en-us/misc/stash/shop/2019-apparel/norse-primaloft-vest

And it's great.  (Primaloft Gold Insulation--none of that inferior Silver stuff!  😆)

I was going to ask about this one. The full jacket gets great reviews here, which has me interested in the vest.
