Suggest a smoother/softer iron shaft!

Recommended Posts

In my 20s I was ripping driver at about 125 and swung out of my shoes on all shots. I got older, smarter, and if I’m being honest, a bit weaker too as my current job ended all gym adventures.

Played C-Taper 130x for awhile, as I lost speed these spun too low and I went to x100s. I like the feel of both the above options.

Lost some speed (now 115 driver) so I tried DG120x in my new HMBs and I don’t like the shaft feel at all. They feel so much stiffer than my x100s and even my ctapers did. The mid section just doesn’t bend!

I’m looking for something that keeps the ball down, but is mid-low spin (don’t need a complete spin killer) that has a softer butt and a bit more life in the mid section than the DG120x. Willing to try something new, and also not sure if I should concede to playing stiff or stiff plus now.

thoughts?

Look at 2 shafts...

Modus 120 and $taper 120s

I don't know much about the modus other than they're really smooth and the ones I've hit had a soft butt feel.

The $taper is like the ctaper and x100 had a baby. Ctaper like spin control, x100 feel.

If the x-stiffs feel too stiff, try dropping down to stiff.  (can apply to both the dg120's or c-tapers).

It’s just so odd that the 120x feels significantly stiffer than the standard x100.

I can’t place it, but it’s just far and away more “boardy” and I leak long irons right now (never did that before) because the shaft has no kick at all.

I was coming from AP2s with x100s and this was not the case... so it’s not like a sudden change of swing or what not, and I really feel it’s the shafts.

anyone else have this issue with DG120x compared to the standard DGx100?

Not exact comparison but I just had the DG 120 S300 in some i210s... I also play the regular S300 in my Hogans and I thought the DG 120 felt much softer, long irons would turn over and they felt a little dead.  I much prefer the S300 honestly, could be just a weight thing, in my head, or a better shaft for me but that was my experience.  I would look at something in the Modus line if I were you.  I also have the 105 stiff in my 745s and the results are very DG-like with a much nicer feel though I would love to try the Modus 125 for some added weight.

Or, what about soft stepping some X100s, maybe add some prosoft inserts or dowels?  Maybe even give the S300 a go.

Considering soft stepping standard x100s.
but as I’m at an point of change, considering branching out to a modus or something.

If you like DGX, I would think Modus 125, maybe softstepped, would be a better look than 120.  IMHO obviously  🙂

This is the clear and obvious answer. Now if I only had the time! Job has me working 6d a week, 12h a day at present. So I don’t foresee this. I’ve hit most offerings in many heads and owned s300 (too spinny) ctapers (too low spin for their launch, at least in the 130x with my current lower spin heads) x100AMTs (may consider these again) modus 120x (liked but only demoed) PX6.5 (didn’t like the feel really) steelfiber 110x (liked but expensive) x100 (solid numbers tbh, but wanted to try lighter offering) and my current DG120x.

Modus 120. I'm going to advise against any KBS products because of their tip bending issues.

Without proper fit, and based on my experience...

1. Modus 120 is softer but completely different bend profile coming from X100 or CTaper X. I would give Nippon SPB a try for similar profile with bit softer feeling in the butt and tip section.

2. Some argue PX is "harsher" but bend profile says different. It might be bit easier to load with soft stepped 6.5 or hard stepped 6.0 compared to your current setup.

3. Modus 130 also comes to mind which to me feels closer to S400.

Hope it helps.

Nippon 1150gh .. awesome ... played in x in s55 for 4 years after x100, SS 1x

the Modus 130 is better feeling, and higher launching, than the 120 as I understand it

recoil 110

steelfiber 95

I am a loooong time dgx100 user and s400 guy so I know the feel you seek ..

I hate c-taper and PX

not as fast as you, 92mph 7 iron, max carry 180

right now loving recoil 95 proto’s

I have similar speed as you and would never have believed it but I recently did a ‘fitting’ by comparing my gamers with similar heads and PX LZ on three different occasions. Kept going back as it didn’t make sense. Monitor numbers had me in the right window and way softer flex than I would have picked. Took my new LZ 6.0 out on the weekend and had way more control and crisp shots than I have had in a long time. On paper they should not work but seem to be a great fit. SS with 7 iron was around 95-100 but spin was ok and real world dispersion was great. Can’t explain it but seems to work for me. Don’t rule anything out until you try it.

LZ would be a good choice to try.  Compared to the DG 120, it's slightly softer in the tip and butt and noticeably softer in the middle portion of the shaft.  You could also go down to a DG300 which is heavier but slightly softer in the middle and tip than the 120 X100's. S300 is pretty close to the LZ 6.5 with the LZ 6.5 being softer in the butt section.

If the $-Taper has been suggested and considered The True Temper Tour Elevate VSS would be a similar option.

Very smooth and Mid Ball flight like the $-Taper with better feel IMHO.

An X-Stiff would work well for you.

Again, more of a Mid flight like the $-Tapers, though.

My recommendation as well.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Didn’t see this option posted...

I’m in a familiar window to you for speed and description of wants. I’ve played x100 and PX 6.5 in past irons I was fitted for.  Just went through a new iron fitting and really enjoyed the feel of the KBS Tour V. Control was great and felt smooth to me.

Also tested the Project X LZ, C-tapers and $tapers. Was a slight up charge for the Tour V but got want I wanted.

good luck. Hope this helps somehow.
