When 57 yards isn't so short...

I always find myself ruminating anything distance related with golf. I might need help.

 

Yesterday it was stopping distance of my Z. Today its this.

I find i have trouble relating golf distances to real world distances too

 

For some reason, i don't feel like i should be able to hit a wedge the length of a football field. It feels like it should be longer than that. 

 

It's psychological i think, in that if you are on your 1yd line in football it feels like there's such a long way to go. Whereas 100yds in golf is a flip wedge, birdie opp.

You see how high that was and it's like "Whoa!!!!", then on the course "man I crushed that drive!," laser it and it's "only" 230 yards.

Wow.  I'll stick to golf and take my risks trying to hit 3 wood over a pond from a down hill lie.

Yeah, it’s mind blowing to think that most golf courses (at least from the back tees) have at least 1 par 3 as long, or longer, than the farthest home run ever hit (roughly 580 feet).  Most guys hit an iron to that distance.

Or every time I've been to Dodger Stadium and it hits me ... "Man, I could go yard here with my PW."

Yeah I  grew up playing baseball and home runs seem so far. I'd love to hit a bucket of balls from home plate in a major stadium. Bucket list item.

A 42 yard field goal is the distance from home plate to second base. A major league catcher can deliver a baseball that distance 9 times out of 10 into a window 2'x2'. An NFL kicker is only 75% from the same distance, shooting at a window about 16 feet wider. Golfing of course, I'd expect 8-9/10 from 42 yards through the uprights (if not more) and maybe 5/100 to be catchable by a second baseman (if not less) 

 

1000 feet can be covered in two swings by most people, and the long hitting pros can get it in one. Long drive champs hit it a quarter mile. Hang times for tour guys on the order of 6-7 seconds, so a Top Fuel drag racer would be able to leave after you tee off and catch the ball pretty easily. 

 

Longest ever ski jumps are about my driver at 260. Its kind of fun to think about.

While watching my sons’ football games I can’t help but think about flighting wedges through the posts.  Sometimes when they're kicking, I wonder how many golf balls I would need to hit the left upright.

It's the opposite for me. When I think of someone being able to carry a golf ball almost the same distance as three football fields laid end-to-end it seems even more amazing to me.
