Air Blow Gun on a Tire Inflator?

Recommended Posts

I want to use some air pressure to remove grips that are in good shape.

I have a tire inflator (for bikes, cars, rafts, etc.) similar to this:

Can I use that, with some type of an attachment, to get to an air blow gun?  Something like this?

Will I need a connection hose between the end of the tire inflator and the air blow gun?

Any help would be appreciated!

I use the chrome barbed piece (below black rubber tip) in this set in a pinch.  Not as good as the real air gun for grips, but I have done a dozen grips with this.

Not sure about the tire inflator at 20psi.  I bought a Porter Cable pancake compressor on sale for about the same price.  Had to buy a connection hose and a kit like this (which has a brass barb like the one above):

Just under $150 for what I have, and I can add a nail gun for trim work if needed.

You can actually use just the things you have with your tire inflator, the black nozzle on the furthest left will work. Blowing grips on/off with a compressor and blow gun is much easier but I can successfully put grips on and off with a 12v tire inflator easy enough.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES.  I used what I had and it worked the first time.  The grip looked like it was going to explode, but I backed off, and got it to work!

Regardless of what compressor/inflator you have, removing grips that have been installed with solvent/tape can be a bit dicey. Be very careful, if they do explode there will be shrapnel that can cause serious eye damage. Id recommend putting some pvc over the grip when doing this to prevent this. Be careful!

IMO you need 40-60 PSI to remove grips.

Keep in mind it also depends on the grip and installation.  Something thin like a Tour Velvet .60 on a shaft with no build up tape and a loose spiral of 3/4" grip tape?  20 lbs. is gonna be plenty, and you could do it with under 10 if you're careful.  OTOH, if you're talking about one of those stiff Winn Wraps or a .58 oversize full cord grip or something like that, especially going onto a shaft with a bunch of build up tape and a full wrap of 2" grip tape....then yeah, 50+ lbs for sure.

And +1 to using some sort of shield.  If it looks like it's going to explode that means there's a chance it's going to explode.  Better safe than sorry--eye protection is cheap, eyes aren't.

I'm pretty good at removing grips with air but Winns are by far the most difficult for the reasons you mention. My success rate is about 50% or worse.
