Golf Trip: Agent or Plan it myself?

Recommended Posts

Sometime early next year I will be planning a golf trip to get away and just play some golf. I am curious to hear from those that have done this, did you use an agent to help determine the route and bookings? Or did you just book everything yourself and map out the plan? Not entirely sure where I plan to go, but it is going to be epic.

I am a #PING fanboy

I guess it depends what you enjoy. For me part of the fun of an epic golf trip IS planning it. As others have said you will get plenty of good advice if you ask here.

If it's just for one or two people definitely easier and almost certainly cheaper to plan it yourself.   I've done this for trips to Scotland, Ireland, and many places in the US.

Do it yourself, unless you're going to some super weird foreign area to golf.  If it's any of the usual places for a trip, google, trip advisor, and air bnb will handle all your lodging.  Hardly any courses that don't have websites.  Google maps to plan drive times for itinerary.

Just pick where you want to go, then jump into the sub forum for that area for course specific questions.

Unless you just don't want to be bothered to do it and have money to spare, then hire a travel agent.

Your wording sounds like going alone, at least not a big group.
If Alone, may as well do it yourself, if you can find good info.

If bringing a group where you want specific tee times on specific courses, at
a popular resort, then a golf packager will be useful for recommendations,
advance tee times, one contact for changes, packages that might save some $,
like play 3 rounds and get 1 free.

I’ve done it both ways. With the agent was great until the last course. Was a complete dog track and ruined our trip. But they hooked us up with rooms. In today’s world air bnb is probably a better way to do it. Honestly places like this are a big help in what courses to play. And much rather take someone’s word on her then some agent that’s probably never stepped foot on a course before. I have heard good things about the place in ocean city Maryland pams golf I think it’s called

I mostly plan my own trips. If you enjoy putting together puzzles, trip planning is fun. It can get complex on trips where you are playing multiple rounds per day and moving from place to place (e.g. trips to GB and I). It was also a pain to deal with all the cancellations when I had to cancel a complex 9 day 12 round trip to Scotland due to Covid where different guys were playing different rounds and staying a different number of days. The bookkeeping and money collection and return was a chore that I would have preferred a service to do for me..

I plan all of my trips and our groups trips myself. Pretty much a few emails and google research will give you all the info you need. I’ve done trips all over the US as well as Scotland and Ireland. Next trip I’m planning is to Portugal.

I  currently plan all my own (and group) trips, but here are a few thoughts on that:

1. At times an agency can get you on preferred tee times or courses that may not be readily available for public booking.  Typically a nice phone call or a pro calling can get the same treatment but it is an extra step in the planning process.

2. Often for the favor explained above, the agency will book you at a lesser course (in every sense of the word) for a wasted round at rack rate.  If you are going to an area with many top notch courses then this is a no go for me, as I am only interested in better courses when traveling.

3. Pay close attention to the cancellation policy in both cases.  Often an agency will have a more strict policy with very little refund room.  Other times the advantage goes to the agency cancel policy (large groups for example).
