Cold Weather Golfers: Do you have a second set of irons for the cold months?

Recommended Posts

This is the first season that I'm planning on playing through the winter, as long as there's no snow on the ground. I'm on the fence about putting together something a bit more playable and distance oriented. My main bag is a combo set of MP20s, but I have a set of Apex CF16s that I'm considering putting some lighter shafts into, maybe even a graphite set to play with over the winter. Take out some of those cold weather stingers you can get and just make them a bit more playable overall when the swing is a little shorter and tighter.

Just hit the middle or change to a softer ball.

Alternate balls on holes so that you're always pulling a warm one out of your pocket at the tee.

Nope, all I do is move up a set of tees.

Just hit the middle or change to a softer ball.

I’d be worried most about a driver and a rock hard half frozen ball

I’ve always played played through the year and I have always played the same bag.
check out the Wilson duo urethane once it’s really cold.  Then enjoy your longest drives ever once the ground is frozen. If you ride get a cart cover and a heater they make a world of difference.  Otherwise walking will keep you warmer.

I may be in the minority, but I do use a second bag for the winter months. For two reasons.

1) No matter what the companies say, I don't like using my EPIC SZ in freezing weather. Bonded carbon fiber and cold, probably not a good combination. I bring out an older all metal driver in the winter (Titleist 910 or Taylormade R7 Limited).

2) I don't play my forged Z745's with SF shafts in the winter. I know... tools not jewels, but frozen ground is tough on forged irons.

I play in the winter because I enjoy getting out and playing. The courses are typically empty up here in Michigan, and love the experience. I'm not playing to affect my handicap (out of season) and I still like my ping cast clubs (S57's). These are the clubs I typically travel with anyway during the season, when bouncing around for work.

I do sometimes change balls in the winter. I usually pick up a bunch of Bridgestone TreoSoft from gollballsfirect for cheap, and then don't bother looking for them in the leaves or snowy areas. I keep a ball in the pocket and swap them out as I play to try to prevent them from becoming a rock hard ice cube.

I don't have any winter clubs, I guess my hacking utensils are replaceable if they get broken. I'm located in SW Missouri where we often have decent winter days.

I put my new balls away until next year or break out a sleeve for serious money games and use my used golf balls as long as they are not scuffed up and in good condition. Softer balls does work too.

I used to, but my winter set became my full time set a couple years ago.

Same heads, Apex Pro 2014, one set has KBS TourV2, the other UST Recoil 110 graphite.  Went with graphite to soften the blow (so to speak) during cold temps.  We don't get much snow but it can get relatively cold here in N. TX.

Also, think about playing winter balls, something low compression, at least that's what we do.

That's how I got my current gamer putter. I was rolling it so well in the winter and when I played on business trips that it is now in my bag. A beat up old White Hot Tour Rossie.

If I had the cash floating around I'd probably get a set of AP2's to use in winter, just to take the wear off my VR Pros and give me a touch more bounce for when it's wet.

Sadly I don't, so the Pro V1's and Nike RZN's go away until spring, and out come the AD333 and Tour Softs instead. I usually drop my 58 degree wedge and go 52/56 instead, as a low bounce lob wedge is somewhat challenging when it's soggy underfoot.
