Did 2020 finally show the golf world that Augusta is just a rather average course?

DJ destroyed the place and Cam Smith was close.   I used to think it was one of the great courses in the world.  Now - it seems like there are far more challenging courses like Oakmont, Shinnecock Hills, Bethpage Black, Carnoutsie, Winged Foot, St. Andrews, or Whistling Straits.  Oakmont is so much tougher as is Bryson's amazing win at Winged Foot.

 

 

The commentator reminds me of that Sling Blade guy.

St Andrew's hard? Hasn't been a tough test for years. Fitness and equipment have moved on. And other courses can now get their greens to the same speeds, or even quicker.

Just because the best player in the world, playing near perfect golf scored well, does not diminish what a great course it is.

Huh, its pretty clear that April conditions are far different, not to mention Augusta has never been touted at a hard course.  Not to mention some of those "hard" courses you mention are only hard because they bake greens out and grow rough super long.

No it's still probably the best tournament course in the world, that was as easy as it gets yet Bryson 'it's a par 67' DeChambeau shot 73 and 74 two of the days.

Agree with @Dave230.  The Masters is about tradition.  Most people  know that course better than their local muni/country club.

OP since you are touting Oakmont as more difficult....did anyone shoot 63 this week?

 

As we often see on tour length is not a challenge to these guys. So even playing nearly 7500 yards with virtually no roll off the tee shots was not difficult for them. Then the greens stayed very soft all week and guys were able to just fly it to the hole on virtually every shot.

the TV camera doesnt do justice to the elevation changes at ANGC, many of the shots are blind and the player has no idea where the shot may have landed, without patrons CBS did a fair job to show the mounds but until you see the property you have no idea as to how much uphill/downhill certain holes play

Being a hard course is not the same as being a great course. I have played most of the courses you mentioned and other than perhaps The Old Course, I prefer Augusta.

This reaction is pretty predictable every time a player dominates, or overall scores are lower than usual. It was different this year for sure for all the obvious reasons...the idea that Augusta is an "average" course is ridiculous on its face.

This is how I seen it go this week, especially the receptive greens. + DJ played flawless.

anyone could set up a a course where it was impossible to break par...just make it 8,000 yards with ridiculously slopey greens and huge rough... that wouldn’t make it a great course.

@OP : No. And St. Andrews is only difficult with strong winds and super fast greens. But it is a great place.

No wind and soft greens all week.  Players could aim at the flag where most years they have to restrain themselves.

 

Great course and great event again this year. Deserving champion as he struck the ball so well and only had four bogeys during the week.

To me it’s the best tournament of the year. It’s about the tradition and the course is the ultimate risk/reward course. Personally I like to see the excitement of the players making birdies and eagles and making things happen rather than watch everyone play defensive ala the US Open

Jack was -17 in 1965

 

Ray Floyd was -17 in 1976

 

Overall, since 1990, the scores have been lower and especially more recently.

 

Not surprising as the length is pretty maxed out and players keep hitting it farther. 
 

This year we saw very favorable scoring conditions. 
 

And they aren’t aiming for par to be the winning score out there.

 

Bryson? He barely made the cut ; )
