"Mud Ball"

Recommended Posts

Brad Faxon says on twitter that network commentators were not allowed to use the term mud ball. Hence, Dottie saying there was organic matter on the ball.

I'm assuming this is some Augusta request because of course Augusta is not a golf course but a medical lab were mud doesn't exist.

Anyone know the back story?

Another announced used the term “earth” yesterday. ANGC doesn’t want the conditions to be reflected “poorly” by the announcers, hence why you hear these terms.

Good for them. Doesn't take much for the viewer to notice the mud, chewed up tee boxes, and patchy spots near the greens. It looked like a golf course after some serious rain, how refreshing.

The best Augustaism from yesterday was "There would normally be a large 'patron observation stand' there..."

Are you kidding me?

Hole location, never pin position, ok.

Patrons instead of anything else... well it gets annoying but ok.

Mud ball? Well thats what it is so not being able to call it that is what it is.

But a "Patron Observation Stand"? seriously? It's a bleeping grandstand, seriously, just call it that.

And later Nantz and Faldo joke that "Masters, fastest way to lose 15 pounds in a week"

"-- yeah I should play the masters so I could lose 15 pounds"

But Augusta knows they can do whatever they want, so they do. Even if we mortals might not like their additude about it.

 Dumb use of a phrase

Makes it sound like it is used to watch patrons rather than the golfers

Limited commercials, no mashed taters as has been mentioned, food is not stupid expensive (though I've never been there, just what I read and hear) and merch is nice.  They have traditions which are nice even if you don't agree with them.  Some of that is just a southern thing.  We tend to like traditions even if they don't necessarily make perfect sense in the modern application.

If they want to try to portray their club on national tv in the best light possible, I can't fault them.

I would think getting the rye to take at this time of year is tough sledding.  Up until about three weeks ago it was still warm here and I am a good ways north and west.  Rye doesn't spread either.  What seed you put down where is what you get.

When asked about what it was like without the patrons.  DJ said patrons once and fans 3 times.  His status for being invited back in April is up for a vote at the next board meeting.

I can hear George Carlin rolling in his grave over "patron observation stand" lol.

At one time it was a running joke because ANGC referred to it as pin positions, but the USGA wanted NBC to refer to them as hole locations.  Not sure when ANGC changed on that.

In addition to the no "mud ball" instructions, the green coats must have also made no talking over the action a point. It was the best broadcast from the CBS crew I can remember in quite a long while. Hopefully it sticks with Faldo. He's actually pretty good when forced to make his points in a single direct sentence.

So many folks complain about politically correct language.  Well AGNC and other pompous clubs helped create it as a way to remind the peasants that they are not part of their world.  This week it was actually refreshing to see the course in rare "muni" form where there were large sections of bermuda poking its weed tentacles through the preferred rye grass.  Coupled with the muddy tees and the roulette wheel of mud balls the players had to adjust.  DJ did it better than anyone ever has with only 4 bogies in 72 holes- just amazing.  But the more this event gets broadcast with its peculiar terms the more it reminds us that golf has its roots in this posh (which I found out last year in a trip to the UK is an acronym for port out starboard home) world of classless upper class organizations who like to look down their noses at the "have nots".
