Scotty Cameron Pistolero grip alternatives

Recommended Posts

I was playing around with a SC Monterey at the store the other day and realized how much I loved the feel of the Pistolero grip that came stock on those putters. The Pistolero is a rubber, midsize, 80ish gram grip with a pretty meaty "axe handle" pistol section. It's made by Golf Pride. Not wanting to spend $40 on a grip, I went searching for similar grips to the Pistolero and am having a harder time than I would expect.

I think what makes the Pistolero feel nice is that while it has a large axe handle portion and thus a decent size from the front to the back of the grip, the size from side to side isn't all that large. So, it feels almost like a P2 or a Flat Cat grip in that it's kind of flattish on the sides.

The closest comparable grip that I can find seems to be the Golf Pride Players' Wrap. That has a bigger butt end, but isn't quite as big overall. The Golf Pride Tour Classic is too round-ish. Most other midsized grips (Ping PP58 midsized, Lamkin Deep Etched, Lamkin Sink Fit Skinny) don't quite have that axe handle effect. The newer Golf Pride Pro Only designs aren't very close in shape to the Pistolero. The Pure Midsize is more of an oval grip.

Any that I'm missing? I haven't been able to try an Iomic Midsize. There's probably some other brands that I'm not as familiar with.

Cobra F9 5 Wood

Callaway PM Grind 60 deg.

Nothing will feel like a pistolero but the lamkin deep etched gets a lot of love and is cheaper.

I second the Iomic Midsized. Have it in my Toulon and it feels fantastic.

https://www.iomicusa.com/   Free shipping over $25 (and their shipping is pretty fast).   Don't buy on ebay--lots of fake grips there.

Have you looked at the Golf Pride SNSR? It’s got a pretty “meaty” axe handle and the 104 is 90 grams. It might be fatter than the Scotty.

Funny you should ask, as I was at Golf Galaxy today and picked up the red one of these trips (the Contour). It definitely has that fatter butt end that I liked in the Scotty. It's a little thicker width wise, but I might just give it a shot.

Like you mentioned above, I put the Golf Pride Pro Only Blue on mine. It’s not quite the same but the sharp ridge on the back gives a pretty similar feel to the Pistolero which I played before.

As someone who's primarily used a Pistolero on everything since it was released, nothing else truly compares. I've tried about every comparable grip and there's just nothing super close IMO. I just eventually gave in and figured it was cheaper for me to keep buying Pistolero's rather than waste money on all these other experiments since I was going to end up replacing them with a Pistolero anyway.

I have a Pistolero on my Studio Stainless Laguna 2.5 and I really like it.  It locks into my upper hand really well.  I have not found anything else like the Pistolero.  I have had both the IOmic midsize and Tour SNSR on other putters and they do not feel anything like the Pistolero.

If you like the grip but not the size, Golf Pride has what should be a smaller one on their website.

I’ve tried many different grips but agree with other posters, nothing compares with a pistolero in locking the top hand. wish someone would make the same grip with the large axe ending.

iomic midsize - didn’t care for texture on back of grip, wish it was all rubber

golf pride pro only red - a little too small on the back end

superstroke pistol 1.0 - way fatter and no taper. Different feel as well.

Just saw on golf prides website. Seems similar and worth a shot at how cheap it is.

That’s my standard / preferred putter grip, but it’s NOTHING like a Pistolero.  It’s much wider and has the triangular spine down the back.

When I couldn't find a replacement Scotty grip I also tried the Lamkin Deep-etched full cord grip (https://www.lamkingrips.com/shop/deep-etched-putter-grips-3/) and I haven't looked back.  I don't know if the weight of the grip altered the balance or if the size, shape and texture just encourage a light-pressured grip, but my putting has never been better.  Anything inside 5-6 ft is just about automatic and longer lag putts are tap-ins.  All in all a good solid grip.
