Looking for a small face Driver

Andygolderson

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Looking for some help to find out which driver heads would be the most smallest profile out there, mostly for the face size, then additionally for the address shape. I don't like chunky drivers.

Recently, i don't have access to golf shops, pro shops or places to see or test clubs, so i'm looking to narrow down my search for further investgiaton.

SIM looks nice, as does the G410 from Ping. I'm currently gaming Cobra Seedzone. It's nice, but the face is too 'flashy' and sounds like a tin can.

Considering going back to my F9 for feel, however, the loft is higher.

Any recommendations out there?

TaylorMade M1 430 and Titleist TS4 are the drivers that come to mind. Both have low-spinning 430cc heads.

Titleist also had a slightly smaller head in the 915D4, but that was 450cc so not much of a difference.  And the 915 models were quite loud.

I haven't hit the M1, but have seen many good reviews here.

I am currently gaming a 9.5* TS4.  I like the smaller head shape, and the feel and sound are dense as opposed to hollow.

Keep in mind that these are both low spinning heads. If your clubhead speed isn't high enough, you'll be leaving distance on the table.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi,

I would recommend you check out Cobra amp cell Pro driver and Bio cell + drivers. They are smaller versions of driver. I have not hit one, but they may work well for you.

I play cobra amp cell driver, and bio cell + 3 wood. I definately prefer smaller 3 woods so I got the + version, but I don't care about driver size yet.

Any driver larger than about 375 CC will have a tall face/chunky appearance.

To have a true "shallow face" I don't believe the head size can be larger than about 260 CC, which is going back to the Titleist 975D era.

A few years back Mizuno introduced JPX driver (light grey head with royal blue trim paint) and the concept of that design was to have as shallow a face as possible. So, to create a relatively shallow face the head design became very deep from front to back, sort of a pancake shape head. If you like shallow faces and want to stay at 460 CC head size, that is the one to try.

Some of these are not what I'd classify as mini.  If you want to go old school and cheap, the Taylor Made SLDR mini driver 14 deg is still in my bag and is quite controllable (it's alongside the Epic Flash SZ and SIM Max D in my bag).  It can go over 250 yds on a good hit (typically 230 avg) can also be hit off the deck as a strong 3w on par 5's.

I have a tour issue Taylormade R7 Quad TP that is about 400cc with a shallow face.  The size is similar to my other Taylormade R510TP and feel almost as good.  The S-yard T.388 is barely shallower than the R7.

Taylormade Original One Mini driver 275cc. Prepare to watch your playing partners chin hit the floor after clipped it past them. Great wind club btw.

I'm another who's jumped on the OO bandwagon.  Like it rather a lot.

I even explored the toe side of Twist Face, and found it worked as advertised; a toe draw/hook that starts right and finishes on target line.

The OO gave me my longest drive of 2020, in November 50* weather, no less.  How about that.  🙂

I play mine at 42.75 with X100 and find no distance loss over a "normal driver". Im sure my "max" is shorter but Im so much more consistent with the OO at that length Ill sacrifice the random super bomb.

That said my 3 longest with the OO (GPS verified) are 362, 348, 341.  Now those involved firm and fast fairways and favorable wind.

Im normally (a good drive) 285-290 off the tee with it at 9.5 degrees

Its not very small, but '17 M1 440. Best driver I've ever played. Came to it late when I was looking for something a bit smaller since I play driver at about 44 1/2.

Nice to see the positivity on that M5 tour. I never realized it was 435cc - I know where I'm looking if/when I ever get bored with the M1

LOL Ed! You've always been a beast off the tee going back to early days of the GEA! Don't be so humble!  😉

I was a low rent district beast, though, LOL.  First guy I met from GEA flew my tee shot by over 50 yds with a 3w,  using a Titleist Professional.  It gives a guy perspective.  🙂

And he wasn't the only one.  Or the longest local GEAer I met.

Must be the hockey up here.  Or all the Scandanavian ancestry.  LOL
