How do you layer up in the 🥶 COLD.

I layer up similarly as already mentioned.  UA Cold Gear base layer top and bottom, warm socks, golf pants, golf shirt, and a thicker 1/4 zip.  I really enjoy Adidas Cold RDY line this year.  The 1/4 zip stretches and moves well, and has zipper pockets to keep hand warmers in.  Cart mitts in between shots also helps.  I don't particularly enjoy golfing in cold weather, but any round I can play in November here in Minnesota and I can't complain.

I must be the only guy here that uses technology to my advantage which is funny because we look for the latest technology in golf equipment but not for the person that has to physically swing the club. Here is my cold go to that will leave you free to swing like summer and keep you toasty warm:

Top:

Polo/RLX or Greyson Thin Quarter Zip/Heated vest

Heated Knit for my head

Bottom:

Heated pants/ heated socks/waterproof golf shoes

Hands:

Titleist sling for my waist with electric hand warmers that I keep on the inside of the sling.

Started this set up last year and it is fool proof. Keeps me super warm and doesn’t restrict my swing at all.

I don't like to have more than three layers on when I play golf in colder weather.  This is easily done when quality clothing is employed.  I have varying thicknesses of Under Armor base layer (in fitted - not the tighter fitting compression style).  Then I have varying weights of the tried and true Mizuno Windlite sweater - In both vest and long sleeve models.  Finally I top those off with a Zero Restriction Windstopper pullover. Again I have various weights of these also. Thus depending on the temperature, wind or sunny/cloudy conditions I can fine tune to any weather I care to play in.

Interesting. Where did you find the heated gear? I’ve seen some on Amazon, but all are unknown brands. Are they washable?

Most everything I have is from Amazon. It’s all washable. Our club liked it so much, they brought some in and put the club logo on the chest and sold them. After showing members how they worked, they sold out in a day charging $80 for the vests. They reordered and have them out at the printer right now and said they’ve already presold half of them.

Would you mind posting a link to the vest?  Just curious how it all works.  Heavy?

Second.  I first read that the heated vest was Polo / RLX or Greyson branded, but I think you are saying that the heated vest is another brand.  Please post some more details for your fellow WRXers trying to get through the winter.  Thanks!

I was out today, 36 degrees, breeze coming off the lake. A pair of Ariat full movement pants.. Wicking UA tee shirt under a Carhartt long sleeve poly, under a Berne half zip fleece under an Orvis wind blocker vest. Snood on the neck, till I got too warm. As it gets colder I will wear thermal UA mock turtlenecks and Johns. I have worked outside my whole life. It has to get pretty damn cold before I really start to dress, my internal thermostat is already set on high. Sweating is deadly. Cotton kills.

played yesterday with a high of 40 degrees with winds maxing at 20mph. Wore nike weatherized pants, thermal socks, under armour cold gear base shirt, ss polo, mizuno windlite and had a beanie and neck gaiter but took those off as I got too hot. Definitely helped that I walked the round. Could have even done without the under armour cold gear.

A good base layer is key.  I am a big fan of the Cresta Wool stuff from LL Bean.  I've got the lightweight and their midweight stuff.

I go base layer and normal golf pants, wool socks.  On top it is baselayer, polo, fleece pullover or windbreaker, and then a puffy vest if thats not enough.  Add some handwarmers and I can be comfortable down to the 40s.  Any colder than that and I'm not playing.

I checked out the LL Bean Cresta Wool long sleeve shirts, but I see that they have thumbhole cuffs.  Are the sleeves then long or do they bunch up at all when you're not using the thumbhole cuffs?

You may find them a tad long but I don't notice it because I have another layer on top of it.  I think I actually prefer them a tad long because then I don't feel the sleeve riding up my wrist when my arms extend in the backswing.

Ok, good to know.  I have longer arms anyway so I might give them a try, especially if I see an LL Bean sale.

Thinner the better for me. Layers are key. I try to avoid days when the whole round will be in the 30s or so, but sometimes the morning will be 30s or 40s before warming up a bit in the afternoon. Regardless, I typically go with something along the lines of:

Legs:

Leggings/long underwear - golf pants - rain pants (if windy/wet or extremely cold) - heavy socks

Upper body:

UA tight base layer - loose long sleeve shirt - golf polo - fleece qz - jacket

Head:

Normal hat with FJ ear band

Typically, if my ears and feet are warm, I'm warm. The outer layer jacket varies based on the weather. I try to avoid hoods if possible because i don't like them flopping around when i swing. Bottom line, i wear layers that are easy to shed if/when it warms up over the course of the round and are not too bulky making it impossible to swing.

Ok, I'll look for that.  Thanks!

I wear compression base layer.  Feels really tight and constricting when you first put it on but it gets better as you wear it and feels fine on the course to me.   You need a snug baselayer to wick any sweat.

I'm going with a 3 layer max this winter.  I think that's all anyone needs if you're walking.

This setup below is good for 25 degree soccer dad duties or golf

Uniqlo heattech base layer -a great and cheaper option.

Mizuno Windlite pullover - wool version.

Mountain Hardwear Dom Perignon Beanie is awesome and provides full ear coverage with Windstopper Technology.

Neck gaiter

Adidas Frostguard pants.

Swiftwicks Wool compression socks

Goretex Ecco shoes
