Forgotten Iron Companies

I had a set of the Toney Penna irons, but none of the others. I'll see if I can add more iron photos to this post as I go along.

I wouldn't consider Acushnet forgotten as they are the parent company of Titleist and Footoy.

Pinseekers were some nice clubs, my friend had his fathers old set growing up. Like most kids he didn't want the old stuff and wanted the newest and "best".

Oh how things change as we age...

Thanks for the reply. I agree about the Titleist. But, they were in the ad for the AJAY irons which dropped off the face of the earth.

And what we wouldn't do to have the set of clubs that our Dad's played with. Life's indeed a circle.

My dad was left handed so weren't much use to me lol

He had a set of slotline inertial irons for a long long time, until I persuaded him to purchase a set of Tileist 981's. After that he became a club ho and my mum asked me "What have you created?"

Wow, those look pretty interesting. Did he keep them?

I know how your Dad felt, for the first 35 years of my golfing life, I barely had an extra putter or wedge. Now, I have a garage full with more on order. I think I'd go back in time if I could. I was pretty happy just having a set I could call my own. The problem now is trying to decide what to keep and give away. I have a friend that I sent 2 sets of irons to this winter, a set of MP-59 and a set of AP2 712's. I think his wife is getting ready to kill me.

Hurricane Golf endorsed by Paul Azinger. Didn't last long and Azinger actually played Mizuno in the Hurricane bag. He was a Florida State Seminole after all.

I had a full set of those clubs.  1 iron to LW.  Don't know what I was thinking.  I was playing FG17 irons and wanted something more forgiving.  Hated the look of Eye 2s so it was between these monstrosities and 845s.

those ProDyns, the over the hosel shaft design was oh-so similar to Hagen UltraDynes.

with ten shaft flex options.

thanks Woodridge, for posting all those great sets.

Some great, and some not so great designs. We had a junior member with a set of Ryder Cup irons. Pinseeker were the dregs for quality. I remember the massive hype around Byron High Blades...

My brother had a set of Ryder III irons and woods, in fact they're still lying around his house somewhere. Pretty sure the irons were cast, and the woods were definitely laminates. From what I remember, the irons look OK at address, but I never liked the feel of them.

He later switched the woods to Petron (?) metalwoods. I think it was Petron. Something like that; definitely began with a "P".

This is the Mk III heel toe weighted iron, their woods were laminated and most of their irons were cast cavity backs.

They were quite successful for a while (and also sold a lot of clubs in Sweden), until the marketing machines of the big manufacturers started to turn everybody's heads.

I've got a set of Petron Impala metal headed woods, they're pretty poor and are one of my reserve sets for when conditions are too bad for wooden heads.

My first real set was a set of Power Stix from JC Penney that I got for Christmas in 1975.  While they didn't say Ajay on the head, on the end of the shipping box was the name of the manufacturer from which they came and that was Ajay.

They were an over the hosel design and had the brass heel and toe weights similar to the Pro Classic.  Shot a 69 with them in May of 1976 just prior to turning 16 and thought I was on my way.  Shot 83 the following week and realized I wasn't.

Ajay really made its mark with accessories like plastic ball markers, divot fixers, scorekeepers, spikes, anything that could be sold on a blister card.  I think my first pull cart was an Ajay model.

The friend with whom I started the game back then had the Pro Classic driver.  I'm sure he still has it.  His very first club was a Ram Dave Hill Spade Blade 5 iron like the one in your signature.

My dad had a left handed set of the Pro Dyn Irons, and he and I both had their laminated woods.  Excellent woods.  I can honestly say I never had any that were better.  Very simple design.  For all of the "innovation" that casting brought in irons in the 1970s, the matching woods were mostly very plain and traditional by comparison.  If you ever see the matching woods that went with the infamous Lil David Slinger irons, you'll see what I mean.  Just the most generic woods you could imagine.

Great posts, Mr. Woodridge!  All of those ads were very familiar to me.  Glad to see I'm not the only one who saved his old magazines!
