Different Grips For Different Short Game Shots?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone utilize different grips around the green to hit different shots and get the ball reacting differently? I was messing around in my basement the last few evenings and found the following:

Low "Releaser"=Double overlap tends to promote higher hands and a slower overtaking rate of the club

Stock "Checker" (e.g. 70% of shots)=Normal interlock/overlap grip

High "Floater"=Baseball grip tends to promote lower hands and a faster overtaking rate of the club (good for maximum spin too with a less open face)

Curious to see if anyone utilize different grips for different greenside shots? Anyone use something similar out of the bunker? I'm kind of digging this approach!

I go to a weaker grip around the greens.

Yeah definitely, I want to release the club a bit differently on different shots   Lower shots / bump & runs - I go for a weaker grip for less wrist action through impact   Hig

I feel like I don’t need to rotate my hands any. So my chipping motion is like Jason Day. Straight back and through so very little hinging for me.

Reason/rationale? Just curious

Lower shots / bump & runs - I go for a weaker grip for less wrist action through impact

Higher or spinnier / bunker shots - a more neutral grip so I can release the club a bit more

They're not dramatic changes for me, just enough of a change to give me a slightly different feeling in the hands of how I'm going to be able to release the club through impact

It usually takes the "hit" out of the equation and results in a "softer" shot.

I definitely switch to a VERY weak grip when around the green for most shots. But I don't necessarily deviate much from that.

I use everything from weak to strong and the "putter" grip around the green depending on what my brain tells my hands to do when I am looking at the shot.

How weak of a grip? 1 1/2 to 2 knuckles? I've tried "1 knuckling it" and end up flexing my left wrist and hitting it too low.

More like 1/2 knuckle. And my right hand is very, very weak.

I have a putting grip, and an other-club grip.

But, I vary set-up more than grip for close in.

Chip and run: normally use a 7i, ball placed center stance with very neutral shaft lean. club has slight toe-in to promote release. Stroke similar to straight-back, straight-through putting stroke.

PW, SW pitch: Ball in center stance, very slight shaft forward lean, pivot back and through with hips lead... too much hands and ball can end up short.

LW pop shot: Ball in center stand, face slightly closed (to prevent fizzle shot), pivot back and through... lead with left hand to avoid fizzle.

(Inside 20 yards, it's either the 7i chip or the LW pop shot).
