Golf Tee Test

I just saw that the Spy Guys did a comparison of the normal wood tee against three other popular alternative tees.  The other tees ranged in price from $1 to $2.50 each.  

 

Spoiler alert:  The standard wood tee performed better than all three competitors.  It had more distance and less driver spin than all three alternatives while at a reported cost of 6 cents each.

I saw that also.  amazing that some of the non standard tees actually decreased distance.  Otherwise pretty predictable.

Actually the normal wood tee beat all three competitors in distance - from two to eight yards.

 

A sharp marketing guy for the normal wood tees should have them put "Longest Tee in Golf" on their packages.

I've never understood putting that much thought into your golf tee. Wood is clearly the way to go and I just pick them up on the course. Haven't even thought about the concept of buying a golf tee in at least 30 years.

Plus many courses give out free wooden tees.  My club even gives out the "standard" plastic ones which last quite a while if you don't lose them.

Best and only tip I ever got about tees was to use non-painted wood tees only. Saves time having to clean the paint marks off the bottom of your driver. 
 

Plastic ones bend too much if you have a hard tee box.

They did this test years ago and the results were very different, they've since deleted that article.

From memory, most of the 'boutique' tees were performing better than wood. Wonder what changed?

A little off topic but..

 

I always use plastic tees with my driver and whatever I can find for par 3s.   Do plastic tees damage the mower blades any different than wood tees?

I use the Martini tees, but not because of any marketing claims. They do one, very specific thing for me: the "stopper" ensures that every shot is teed at the same height. Unless I'm specifically trying to tee it much higher or lower for a particular reason, that means my likelihood of "center of face" contact is much increased.

I just take the the tees I get at courses, but almost all of them tend to be some sort of plastic.

I play the plastic callaway ones mostly... they seem the same as the wood but one can last me a zillion rounds so thats why i use them.

I too have become a martini tee guy. Consistent height, and they're damned near indestructible. One bag is a lifetime supply.

Me too.  I’ve found the “stopper” martini tees are absolutely perfect for my SIM.  Vertically centered contact is way up.  They are no longer; but hitting center more often is.

I seem to always get some of those weird tees as gifts from well-meaning family members. I've never seen any better distance or dispersion from the normal boring plastic tees I use.

I enjoy using wood tees and the classic nature of them, but I break them on every tee shot. Where as the plastic I can use the entire round no sweat. I hate walking up to the tee box then remembering oh yea I broke my tee on the last tee shot, now I gotta run back to bag for a tee. I just like having 1 long and 1 short tee in my pocket the whole round and never thinking about it.

I bought some Maxfli plastic tees at Dicks and so far, 1 I forgot, and 1 got pounded in. 2 tees in 10 rounds seems like they have paid off and I think I got 40 in the bag.

 

Other than being pronged, they are the same as a wood tee. No fancy stops or color, just a white tee.

Don't forget that any wood, or bamboo, tee is totally natural and decomposed by earth borne organisms.  But broken plastic tees will live forever. clogging the tee box.

Me personally I only use plastic tees because of its durability.  I bought 100 of them from a Chinese seller from Ebay about 6 years ago and probably went through 20 of them so far and mostly because I couldn't find them or forgot to pick them up after my tee shots.  They rarely break because the plastic tees that I use don't get brittle in colder temperatures (they just bend).

Plastic because they last longer. I have used Martini but after a lot of use they break too. I found on of those "5 yards longer" tee They are decent but I don't get 5 more yards

I forget the tees after shots more often than I’d care to admit.

That's another good point...they are really easy to tee up.

I started using Martini tees. They are very durable. I broke other plastics tee at times, but never to a Martini tee. I also like their idea of tilting the ball to the target. It makes sense to me.

I agree, and yeah, I have had other plastic tees break on me. Like Twinkies, Ping irons, and cockroaches, these tees could survive a nuclear blast, lol.

That is pretty much me - one "normal sized" plastic tee for the driver and a small plastic tee for irons and fairway woods. Add a ball marker and a repair tool and I'm all set.

I find more Tees than I break at the teeboxes.. 

One of my playing partner uses the Champaign Tees.. always bragging that it will never break..  I won't tell him that it's actually shorter on drives..😜

 

Found few of these.. Seems they are very durable..
