Trying to tell the difference. Something softer maybe.

Recommended Posts

For the most part, I have been playing Nittro because they are cheap. But after some interesting reading and feedback, I decided to try a few "better" balls to see if I can tell the difference. So by next week, I should have the following:

Bridgestone E6

Taylormade Project A

Titleist NXT

Nike Mojo

They all seem to be slightly softer than my usual, so I will be doing a bit of side by side this winter. I generally play 2 ball scramble, so I will be sure to not favor one over the other.

These aren't horribly expensive balls and if I notice a difference, it will make things more interesting.

I know you can't get the Mojo anymore, but I got 100 for $35, so I couldn't say no. I'm also not saying these are my only options, it's just a starting point.

I have honestly never noticed a difference between balls on the course. But I am just starting to play semi seriously and very regular. From maybe 3 rounds a year to at least 100 rounds next year. So if a ball makes a difference, I'm game.

I have a few different orange that came in a batch I bought, but most are Maxfli, a few "Bomb" I thought were funny. But I think this is a good start.

i have found and hit some of these nitros on the courses and i must say... mostly every ball is at least descently good and soft except dor the nitros. They are way harder then anything ive ever hit the end result is almost always a loss of yardage. Yes they are cheap and im not here to tell anyone how to spend your money but if you value better golf then you must at least play a noodle long and soft which is $15 for i think a 15 pack. Ive hit all kinds of balls and the cheapest i would go is the noodle long and soft or straight. Its a really decent all around ball at a good price. Their is a big time difference in golf balls and i didnt really think that until i took three different balls from different brand and putt with them all back to back. The differnce in feel was shocking so you can just imagine  with driver irons wedges what it also does for your game.

Now that I have what is considered nicer irons, I am try to take advantage of that.

While I am a cheap bastxxx, I am not against spending a couple bucks if it means I will notice a difference.

So far I have had pretty good luck getting used balls off eBay that look like they haven't been hit for less than $.50 a ball. I think by spring I will be averaging 2-3 balls a round vs the 5-6 I am losing now.

Granted, the last couple rounds I lost more on the fairway than I did in the water. 🤣

It seems my batch of Nike balls was a mix with mostly Mojo balls. I honestly had no idea they had that many balls. Some of the names are pretty epic. "Super Far" I  am guessing is a distance ball. 🤣

I played the TruFeel by Titleist this weekend and really liked it. I wanted a lower compression ball for the cold weather and a red matte color for leaves and sun glare issues. The TruFeel was a little shorter off my driver and a little longer with my short and mid irons, which is interesting. The red matte worked well- very easy to spot. I had no problem stopping it on the greens despite it being a two piece ball. I think I’ll like it even more as the temperature drops more. I got a box of 12, so I’ll have enough left to play when summer rolls around too- I’m curious how it will play in hot weather.

Man, I lost 7 balls today playing 9. 4 in the water, 3 lost in the leaves just off the fairway.

I am playing a mix of white, orange, and yellow based on leaves. Some are easier to find than others.

My advice- the last place to be cheap is with the golf ball, it's the most important piece of equipment.  It's ok to go with less than premium balls, but I'd avoid used balls if they could have been under water, or otherwise comprised and I'd also skip over rock hard balls like nitros.

Adams a7 19*, 22*

Maltby TS3 Forged 5-9

Vokey SM7 46F, 52F, 58M

The Nitro Crossfire is listed as an 85 compression. Not as hard as some, but certainly not the softest. It is softer than the Topflight XL's I have (listed at 90), but I wouldn't know that from hitting them.

And THIS is why I started down this rabbit hole. I have at least a dozen different Nike balls to toss in the mix for fun. Most are in great shape, but a third or so are total burners.

I didn't pick any Srixon or Callaway balls this round as I felt I already had a good sampling to start with. There are certainly any number of balls, hell, I have at least a dozen different Nike balls already.

The next few batches are all the same, so I will have 50 of each @ $.55/ball.

The Taylormade and Bridgestone balls showed up today. About a 1/3 have some discoloration, but overall look great. I grabbed 5 of each in the bag and will likely play all 4 days I have off. Should be a fun test.

Good round this morning using the Taylormade Project a and a couple different Nike balls. The RZN Black was nice. Not sure I could really tell a difference. I played the exact same shot with either ball a few times.

I only hit a Bridgestone a couple times. I chipped one on 3 and 4. Then drove it into the water on 5. The Taylormade seemed to be the hardest to lose, but that could just be chance.

Tomorrow I will be playing Bridgestone E6 and Nike whatever's. PD Long was one I ended with today.

For those keeping score I lost 7 today. 2 OB, 4 into water and only 1 in the leaves.

The Nike was short while the Bridgestone went 12' past the pin, but was still on. Other than this shot, they were mostly even.

This is why i stop playing golf after usally mid october also with other problems being ground being too mushy. Give yourself a break on some of the lost balls from the leaves... if you feel you hit it In the fairway or just into the rough and should be ablr to find it but the leaves might be covering it i wouldnt count it becuase its not the normal circumstance. Unless you really hook one into the woods though or water then count away. Hate the dreaded split the fairway in the summer and the ball is nowhere to be found shot 😕

I played the Titleist NXT and the Nike Mojo today. I hit some very solid shots today. I sliced the Mojo into the Pond on 5 and replaced it with a Taylormade. That was the only lost ball in today's round and I hit 4 greens in regulation in 9 holes.

The Titleist seemed to hit well.

I don't really keep score since I'm just playing for fun by myself. Really just working on various shots. Like the approach on 2. With a half decent drive short of the water, it's only 100 to the pin. So today I dropped one about 140 out and hit the green nicely with my 7. Then hit my drive with PW. I drove the Titleist, dropped the Nike.

Why would I need to measure myself with other golfers? Is there a prize I wasn't told about? I'm playing by myself 90% of the time, so I basically gauge my shot progress.

I play golf as a game. It's fun. I have good days and bad, today was really good (4 greens was nice). Had I played 1 ball straight, I would have been about 3 over par, maybe? Maybe not.

I was close to scratch in college and I would like to be about that, but my drives still need a little work and I am a little off on my yardages with my irons, but this is my 5th or so round with them. They are also quite a step up from my old irons, all my clubs were a healthy skills upgrade.

I mean, if y'all are getting paid for this, let me in on it. Otherwise, I don't see the point of tracking a handicap (other than bragging rights). I have improved from yesterday hitting only one green to 4 today. I am pretty sure by spring I will be shooting par or better most days on this course.

My goal is to justify trips to play Bandon. I can lose balls all day locally, but I want to get good enough to lose balls down there. 🤣

Maybe it's the ball, maybe it's just luck. But the Titleist seem to be the hardest to lose. At least so far, but I have only played 4 rounds so far.

Today I played another Titleist NXT and a few different Nike, one Bridgestone E6 and 1 Taylormade. Not sure if it's luck, chance, or the ball, but I have a tough time losing the Titleist NXT. I played the same ball until my second shot on 9 that went a little left into the leaves. The one I played Sunday lasted until I put it in the drink on 7.

Again, not sure if it's just luck, or I do actually hit them better. But so far I am happy with them all.

I stopped myself. I realized I have nearly 300 balls now and while I have been losing quite a few, it still might take a bit to get through this current stash. I was going to get some Titleist Tour Soft to compare to the NXT Tour that I am liking so far. But first I need to get through these.

300 seems like a bit much, but maybe not.

You can never have enough golf balls.  Currently in the process of hoarding as many MTB-X balls as the wife will allow.  😬
