It may be US Women's Open, but could it also be Japan Women's Open

Nine Japanese players, including leader Shibuno, will reach the final

remember my JLPGA quotes?  🙂     Looking at the rough at the champions courses reminds me of the Japanese courses' rough(s) last year when I was there in the summer of 2019 (temps were in the 20C level with 10-15C in the mornings during July 2019).  (One of which Shibuno won - the Shiseido event in jul 2019 - in the rain on the final day)...  I am no agronomist but there's something with "dormant rough" that reminds me of the rough in Japanese courses...  also visited other courses as I travelled to Mt Fuji also and saw other courses/tons of driving ranges along the route to the mountains

Addendum/Edit -- upon further research yields this - dunno if that is part of the reason/observation (article from 2010): "The conversion to a one-green system comes following recent developments in cool season turfgrass that now can withstand Japan’s intense summer heat while continuing to provide a superior putting surface in the cooler seasons. In addition, many Japanese courses are currently converting to the one-green system to reduce turfgrass maintenance costs, Jacobson said. “The current golf market in Japan is similar to that in the US as courses are now operating with conservative budgets while being challenged to attract and retain golfers during difficult economic conditions.”

I believe the 1 green system referred to are actual greens. I have played in a few courses in Japan where each hole had 2 greens, with different grasses for different seasons. The first time I played one I aimed for the wrong green 45 yards to the left.

The fairways or this case dormant rough is usually the same turf as the winter greens.

yes i recall a jlpga event (on fuji tv) where they had to properly land the ball in the correct green LOL...

I know this can be said for many of golf rounds BUT SYK had a quad on her second hole of this event ........without it she'd be at 5 under ; 2 back......still in a position to strike right now.....flying under the radar?

i still believe she's the "explosive" one that could "explode" and capture everything all in 9 holes (yes, 9 holes not even one round)...  odds are against her now that there's 36 holes left (9 holes/36) but still possible...

I am curious if Paula Creamer transitions from player to analyst. I have heard her do analysis and she’s pretty good. She’s better than Paige, Michele Wie, and Natalie Gulbis. It seemed to come natural for her. Kinda like how Phil is destined to replace Johnny Miller.

Paula needs to do Dancing With the Stars. Could consider it a part of her rehab.  She is talented in that regard and the LPGA could use the exposure as a golfer has never graced the ballroom BUT many other sports figures have done so. Maybe Natalie will be the first but I'm confident Paula would be awesome at it. PS:  I'm a former dance teacher.💃

Yes, Japan had (and still has on many courses) two greens. One was/is usually korai grass for winter and the other bent for spring to autumn. In the roaring, bubble 80's, why build one if you could build two at twice the price?

So many courses went bankrupt after the bubble burst, and the government eliminated the tax exemption for corporate golf.

Now corporate ownership by golf management companies like in the US has taken over, so maintenance cost is heavily scrutinized and better agronomy has brought about conversion to one-green courses.

Maintenance at Japanese golf courses is still first rate. If a Japanese course looked like an average US course, the entire maintenance staff would commit ritual suicide in the parking lot.

Just to add to this topic, ye-Oh, @Soloman1 has beaten me to it. However, he's completely wrong about one thing. The maintenance crew would NOT commit ritual suicide in the car park, they would do it on the greens, so their blood fertilizes the grass for the next 500 years.

Also, most of the two-green courses featured Bent and Korai. Korai was for summer, and Bent for the cooler months. However, Korai is not popular among golfers because it's a sod to putt on (though some classic courses still have it. I think Koga, the venue for the 2019 Japan Open has Korai greens), and Bent suffers if the temperatures go above 35*C.

Anyhow, courses with two greens are on the decline.

Oops. You're right. I transposed summer and other seasons.

And just for the record, Japan has 4 seasons. One month of cold weather (February or so), one month of jungle heat, one month of rainy season where it rains two out of three days...

And nine months of road repair.

🙂

I always say it has five seasons: summer, autumn, winter, spring, and the rainy season. Though sometimes we get a sixth: the typhoon season. Oh, joy.

Actually, the rainy season down in Kyushu really is another season. It's not spring, and it certainly isn't summer. Cloudy, hot, humid, and, well, rainy, and it lasts from 6~8 weeks, usually early June to the end of July.

Speaking of Japan, I'm watching Round 3 live on Japanese TV on YouTube. I get a bit of it - just watched Charie Hurrie putting. But speaking seriously, all the Japanese I know speak much better English than I could ever manage in Japanese. I did try once in a language lab.....

No idea how to rate the commentators. They sound very smooth and chatty.

Course is playing long. Wet fairways and damp air are playing havoc early.

Finally got around to creating a Peacock TV account. Figured I'd watch the live coverage on my Fire Stick. FFS. The app is not available on the device, so I had to jump through 12 hoops to sideload the app. Streaming is quickly becoming a royal PITA.

Not all that bad.  Of course I setup for sideloading initially so re-installing Peacock was only a slight annoyance.  Typing with the remote is the worst part.

Grant is right, there are lots of big names lurking. However, as they start to make the turn they have to get moving. Looks like a 69 or better is going to be needed.

I enjoy following the Jutanugarn sisters on Instagram, epecially since they added a new family member, the adorable pup Casper Jutanugarn.  I've said many times the ratings for golf would skyrocket if the players could bring  pets to the competition.  It would be hilarious to see young Casper scamper away with an  opponent's golf ball.
