5-Wood or Hybrid

cristphoto

Recommended Posts

Anyone carry both a 5-wood and a hybrid?  I have driver, 3-wood, 5-wood and 3 and 4 hybrids.  All are Taylor Made M4 series.   I hit the 5-wood farther than either hybrid but the hybrids seem to have more capability from the rough.  I'm often swapping out one of the hybrids for the 5-wood but can't decide on a permanent bag make-up.  Irons are 4-pw, and also gap, sand and lob.  Any others sway back and forth with clubbing at the top end of the bag?  Thanks.

Following.

I've done it all and have no clue still.

2020 had 3 & 4 hybrids.

2021 will have a 5 wood and players distance 4 & 5 irons.

5 wood for more distance.

Hybrid for versatility.

Driving iron for windy links course.

I interchange them depending on the course I play.

You should probably compare a 2 hybrid to a 5 wood if looking for comparable distance.  That said, carry which one you can hit the best. I'm more likely to hook a hybrid than a wood.  So it's finally turned into a 5 wood for me.  Off the tee I use a 2 iron for shorter, tighter holes, only very rarely using the 5 wood instead of the 2 iron in that situation.

My default go to setup is Driver, 3-wood, 19 deg hybrid (3) when I'm playing well. If off a bit I'll pull the 19 and put in the 22 (4).  When I'm playing in tournaments I pull the hybrid and put in the 5-wood since we play the back tees and have much longer par 4's so the 5-wood can come into play more on approaches.  Either way I tend to have a hole around the 200 - 210  yard mark.

This year's set up with the 2 hybrids wasn't bad at all... Just looking for something new. I could certainly end up mixing and matching as well.

Really just trying to eliminate my worst shots and get better.

Hybrids are terrible for me, I never want a “medium” flight. 5 wood or driving iron

Depends on comfort. If you hit Long irons and hit hybrids well, then carry the and 4 hybrid, ditch the 4 iron and the 5 wood

Here's my thoughts:

Driver

3 wood

5 wood

4 & 5 Players Distance (ie T100s)

6-G MB

54, 60 wedges

Should be able to work something out of any lie from any distance.

2 Hybrids in the top half kinda limited options as I wasn't 100% comfortable with hybrids.

I haven't had my 816 H1 in the bag for around 12 months and haven't missed it.  I bag Driver, 16.5 deg 3 wood, 18 deg 5 wood, 4-P 52,56,60 Putter.  Was toying with putting a 21 deg 7 wood in the bag for fun.  I can always hit the 4 iron low off the tee when required.

Hybrids are great clubs.  Versatile, hit them high and low.  But I found as I practice less, they can be unpredicatable.  I never have the massive misses with the FW metals I do with the hybrids.  My driver speed is aroun 108mph for reference.

I got a 5W last year and it was a welcome addition. I use a 4H instead of the 4I and it suits my game.  If I had to give up a club it would be the 5W as I can throttle back the 3W.

I am a bit weird in that everything from 18-24 degrees in a wood or hybrid kind of bunches up and goes the same distance. I must be doing something to manipulate delivery that makes them all similar.

I have

driver 8.5

3 wood 14.25

1 iron swaps in and out with 21 hybrid as they both carry similar but have completely different flight. If its windy 1 iron is in.

23hybrid lofted to 25 that is getting a 5 iron steel shaft this week to match my irons

6-pw mp18

52/56/60 hi toes

Putter.

The course i play most often i need anything from 200-240 off the tee at most of the par 4's that leaves max 160 in which is 8 iron for me so most of the time I am hybrid off the tee and 9 iron or wedge of some sort to the green.

I found I had cluttered up the top end of the bag with too many options and too tight gaps at the top and just thought how accurate can I really expect to be and do I realistically need to be from the 200-240 range So took some clubs out and left myself with something that is forgiving that is 210 club, I have options for 230-240 for high and low then 3wd is 260+

This does everything I realistically need and gives me options at the lower end.

The best player in my group goes driver, 5wood, 4hybrid, 5 iron and hits the 5wood a lot off tee and the deck brilliantly. I think if your yardage gaps are filled properly and you have confidence in the sticks, that’s what counts more than what’s stamped on the club.
