Tell me something I don’t know…

It is a fallacy to suppose that any particular part of the body, such as the arms or wrists, has to be very specially applied to the task of hitting the ball.

The whole anatomy should work as one piece of mechanism, with the club as part and parcel of the human frame.

I find that a lot of force can be generated by the right hand (but of course is supported by the rest of the body like throwing a baseball) but that in order to get the right hand into position the left hand and wrist must push back at some point the backswing away from the body and conversely pull back down to start the swing.

 

As far as I can tell the push movement of the left hand lines up the muscles in the left hand and forearm and creates structure that acts as a space between the arms for the right hand and arm to operate withing that won't easily break down under a vigorous right hand action. Basically the swing is a push - pull - throw action to maximize one's potential clubhead speed.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

I'll try and give my piece...good golf revolves around two things:

1) GIR: Get the ball on the green at all costs.

2) Five-Footers:  If you are nails from five feet you will always get up and down and you will never three putt.

 

Btw, I stole that five-footer line from Brandt Snedeker.  I saw it in this clip and it has always stuck with me.

You're right, that's the quote I was thinking of. Releasing from the top is the same feel as attempting to throw the angles. It doesn't happen like that but it feels like it.

I think that maybe the case for many golfers but not all. I don't think about my hips at all and don't try to pull my right hip back.

Review his book, Jack did not toss or throw anything from the top to the best of my memory,  he felt a wrist hinge-c0ck increase up to waist high on the down sequence because he worked from the ground up,  then CF did it's part.
