Who is the best putter on wrx..let’s find out

I did mention this drill/test in Obee’s thread, but it’s a quiet time of year let’s play a little game.

take 5 balls at a time from 12 feet (or 4 strides ish) and work your way around the clock. Time how long you take to hole 50. Obviously a flatter and smoother surface will give you an advantage. No need for any practise strokes as it’s against the clock.

I like doing this after an hour on the range since it takes me 20 mins ish, which fits my concentration span for putting.

I ‘think’ I’m a reasonable putter for my handicap, my best is a little over 18 minutes. Give it a whirl and report back

I like the challenge but I probably wouldn't even break top 10.

With anything practice related, I prefer to not put a time on a routine or drill. It makes the practice oriented to "how fast" rather than "how good". For me, that just speeds everything up...no bueno.

That's why most putting drills of this type have a re-start if you miss.  The OPs idea has merit, but the metric and drill need some tweaks to not make it purely a speed contest.  Maybe 6', 25 putts, and start over if you miss?

I agree, much better drill. 5 in a row from 4 feet from 4 different spots. Then 5 in a row from 8 feet from the same lines as the 4 footers. Miss and start over from the spot. Give yourself a time cap of like an hour and log where you get to.

Or, just putt 5 and 10 footers for 85% of your overall practice time.

Not trying to bash op's method, I just prefer a less time forced method.

^im just going for simplicity, however if you try it I don’t think you’ll find you just machine gun balls since they aren’t going to go in. The only difference to my actual putting routine is no practice stroke.

the carrot is to putt well and finish putting practice quicker (unless you actually enjoy putting practice I’ve heard such people exist..)

I think 12 feet is too far.  The make % from 12 feet is low enough that you are going to watch yourself miss most of the putts you hit.  This isn't great for putting confidence and can actually hurt your putting.  Probably better to stay inside 5 feet and see yourself make most of the putts, or practice until you can make most of them.  Maybe better to go around the clock with 5 balls and see how many attempts it takes to make 50 putts.

I'd actually do the challenge, but actual golf was over a month ago and baring a vaccine miracle, golf is still 4+ months away.  Practice putting right now would just wet an unquenchable appetite.  But, I could always lay down the PuttOut Matt if I really needed to.  Maybe in March?

I prefer the Pelz putting / short game handicap tests.

http://www.jmgolfacademy.com/dave-pelz-short-game-handicap/

I need to retake the short game one as I am much better than I was just a two months ago, but for putting feel very good about it as I came in with 89 points and a +2 handicap.

For me, I'd consider this a torturous alignment slog. If my alignment and sight picture is off, I would rather fix it by having a chalk line or elevated string instead of doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

It's not like I'm just learning how to putt. I know how to concentrate.

It's like playing something on the guitar or piano. Once I have it down, I don't need to practice it relentlessly. Sure, I would need to practice a few times if I hadn't played it for a while or lost it being second nature to play without thinking about every note.

I don't need a million reps to hit a ball on the ground with an almost flat stick. I'd be more productive practicing with a club that I'm not hitting well at the time. You know, hitting the club I hate.

But, people are different. For others it might be fun.

Looks like a fun challenge and drill. It could help your putting. However, the speed metric should be taken out of the equation because speed is not a reflection of better. The best putter would be determined on the "make percentage" within a preset number of putts. The larger the sample size of putts the more accurate determination of the best putter.

Would love to do something like this if we can agree on the parameters. But I agree with some of the others -- not a big fan of anything that rewards rapid-fire putting.

Obee, it’s now your bbq! Any format you want but I’d keep it ultra simple imo.. no need for it to take more than 20 mins and preferably doesn’t need a pen and paper?

Putt two tees a foot a part & two feet from the fringe

You get one ball from 1-10 feet and add two tees 6 inches infront of the two tees

You get two balls from 11-20 feet and add two two tees a foot infront of the two tees

You get three balls from 21-30 feet and so on (add two tees 1.5 feet infront of the two tees

Start at one foot ... putt the ball in the box & then go back to two feet if made ... and so on

At 11 feet, you must putt at least one ball in the box, one ball may be in the short box

At 21 feet, you must putt at least one ball in the box, two balls may be in the short box ... and so on

If you miss the goal at anytime ... go back to 1 foot & start over

I don't know my record ... Ive never done the drill

I would recommend only using one ball ... so you have to take your time & walk to get the ball after each putt

Make Sense?

Can I use 4 pieces of Big Wheel track?

I think it sounds interesting, the timed part of it gives me a little pause in terms of a race against the clock as well, but since I won't be putting outdoors for several months and don't have an open space that allows me much more than a four foot circle around the "hole", I'll enjoy seeing others' results.

This is a bizarre thread, Miles you appear to be a very good troll, at least to me you do in this and  other threads.

I’m not a particularly good golfer. I think I’m just about good enough  to give some occasional basic advice, but there’s at least a dozen people here who are far more accomplished players and/or coaches.

You aren’t one of them

Yeah ive got the same issue, don’t know how much I can get on a real green this winter.

i know people don’t want to be against the clock, but if they try it they’ll find you’ll miss almost all of them by rushing and that you’ll be done quicker by taking it slowly.

its simple and doesn’t require pen and paper, but I’m open to a practical suggestion for something not against the clock..
