Sons of Pro Golfers - did any of them ever match up to their father?

Well the son's swing actually looks better and one wag said he looks like Rory.  The kid looks great.  The fan bois will now have decades of Charlie worship.  Will Charlie get a marketing nickname like Panther Woods, Cobra or Cheetah?  I am not picking on him, I hope he does well.

The question though is have any sons matched up to their dads?   I can only think of Billy Haas and his dad Jay Haas.   I like Billy and he was playing well but kind of dropped off the earth.  Staying in the Top 50 on the PGA Tour is hard.

Charlie will have the best equipment, coaches, sponsors, etc.  I mean he might have Butch or Hank Haney or Sean Foley coaching him.

The problem is most of these guys on tour like Tiger, Phil, Bryson, DJ, Rory, etc are almost not human.  It is hard for a player to be as good as their dad.

Any other examples?  David Love III dad was a club pro but that does not really count.   Tommy Armour III?  Arnold's grandson Ryan?

I was in a sports place in the ammo dept and started talking to a guy who's dad was on the tour with Golden Bear.  The kid had been good but I did not ask him why he never got his card.

I still love this and also miss Johnny Miller doing commentary:

Mark McCumber's kid should be good

Gary Nicklaus had no chance

Bob Tway's son is solid

Kevin Stadler chasing down Stads, tough company there as well

Bill Haas was derailed by the car accident that killed a family friend.  Never really came back from that.

Would liked to have seen Johnny Miller's son go out on Tour, but instead he chose missionary work for the Mormon Church.  Lots of sons make it to the Tour, most just can't break into any kind of elite status.  Kevin Stadler was destroyed by the anchoring rule and quit.  Davis Love III is likely the best Tour player whose father was a name.

I forgot about that accident.  I like Bill Haas.  Sad.

How does Davis Love Jr not count? 4 professional wins and played numerous Masters/US Opens/Opens/PGA Championships throughout his career. Sounds like a professional golfer to me. Sure, he had to supplement his playing career with a club pro job, like many others in that era when events didn’t pay what they do today, but that shouldn’t disqualify his professional career. Maybe he wasn’t Ben Hogan, but even Hogan had to work a pro shop job at times.

Kevin Stadler did not quit golf.  He has been dealing with hand injuries since 2015. He currently has 17 starts left on a major medical exemption to get his PGA Tour privileges back. He has played 5 of the last 7 weeks on the PGA Tour. Unfortunately he has not made any cuts. His current play and results are very Smylie Kaufman-esque.

Ok.  Last I had heard of him was post anchoring and he couldn't putt any more.  I would be good if he can make a comeback.

DJ Trahan is one.  Dad won quite a bit in the Carolinas pga circuit and many of the smaller tours.  Dad is a pga master which is a rarity . I think Davis love counts as eclipsing a pro father too.

DL III def comes to mind.  He had a better career than his father who in his own right, was a very good pro.  Tiger's kid will never be as good as his dad.  I'm not a fan of Tiger, but he is arguably the best golfer of all time.

There have probably been a dozen sons of of fathers who had earned a Tour card. There have been hundreds of Tour players with a father who was a club pro/teaching pro.

I guess among the sons of Tour pros , in terms of tournament wins DL III is the most accomplished.

Tiger's young son has fundamentally sound swing technique, which will make the game much, much easier for him than kids who try to play golf using unorthodox technique. If Tiger's son puts in the thousands of hours of range/ short game/putting practice needed to be a dominant player, there is no reason he can't win lots of tournaments.

Old and Young Tom Morris..

but I saw @cardoustie links about father son winner and went into the rabbit hole about willie park and willie park jr...

they could play...wow

they were the second coming of the Morrises...granted nobody could equal them but willie sr beat old tom a time or 2...

btw, we need the return of the winners belt....it’s like a green jack but super pimp

Aside: willie jr designed some amazing courses including Olympia fields where a few us opens have been played

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
