Wondering if anyone here has followed a similar path.  I'm back in the game after a decade long layoff and have really wanted to dedicate the next 2 years to improving my ball striking and scoring with a single digit HC goal.  Played a bunch of rounds this summer with my old GI Pings and got my HC down to ~16, former baseball player, good eye hand coordination long off the tee and a ~175 7i distance, the problem is I have a very steep swing and a nasty slice/push slice so I am rebuilding my swing from the ground up.

The old Pings shovels I was playing are very forgiving with mis-hits but with my goal of fixing a broken swing and not just hitting the most forgiving iron I picked up a set of MP20 MMCs from someone here for a smoking deal with the logic that if I'm determined to fix my ball striking I should have a set of irons that highlight my misses.

I have lots of time to practice and live <5 minutes from my club, so I guess what I'm asking is has anyone here played irons likely out of their league and successfully practiced their way in to them?  Fixing my slice and ball striking is my number 1 priority over immediate scoring. It took me a few weeks to get used to the thin topline and smaller body but I'm confident taking them on the course now but my scoring has definitely taken hit.

I've posted about it before but yes. I started golfing in 2018 and am now a + cap. Shot 67 today. Former pro athlete and have put hundreds and hundreds of hours into it. Was playing GI irons at the beginning but soon after got into players irons and blades. Helps with feedback and control. You’ve got the length. No reason those won’t work great for you. Find a good pro, groove the swing and put the time in. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need resources in improving quickly in the game.

Have you hit those vs any others? Very curious to hear about them.

Yes I own them and have 4 rounds on them.  Feel, looks (I dont notice the weight in the back like some others do), distance control, consistency are all there.  I have hit the T100s and say they are comparable performance wise but for me the Cally feel better.  This is the best feeling Cally iron I have ever hit.

I see people responding with 4 & 5 irons as if you guys are bigger Club Ho's then me.   In a year some of you are buying 4 & 5 sets

to try and can really rank them or just by what you " Think" ?  Obviously some did buy these and you make my addiction look mild. 😝

Seems to be a lot of love for the '20 X Forged. I just dont get what they were thinking with that PW... The P7MC's are pure sex to me but hearing they are basically blades. Probably going to wait on the ZX7's to at least to get into fitting carts but I think I am leaning that way. The T100 is a nice looking iron as well.

I have played Callaway X-Forged 18 for 3 seasons and now plan to upgrade/replace with new releases. So far I tried T100, P7MC, X-Forged 21 CB, Apex pro DOT, and double DOT irons, and the front runner is Apex pro DOT. I understand it’s from 2019 and not a new release, but it looks, feels and performs the best for me. The only other one I will try is Srixon zx7.

921 Tour, ZX7 or P7MC.

Do not rate the King Cobra MIM or Callaway X Forged. Not even a little bit.

Looks wise p7mc would be my #1 choice, however I have yet to see them in person or hit them so not sure if they offer enough help in the mid to long irons. If I combo I don’t really want to combo anything after 5 iron for like 770 or zx5 etc.

Srixon completely nailed the combo. ZX range requires a very keen eye to notice the differences in the bag and at address.

Most other manufactuers have clubs that can perform as a combo but they look nothing alike. Hard pass for me.

I have yet to see those in person either, the only drawback to the Srixons for me would be what seems like kinda a meaty top line for the Zx7’s. I hope that’s not the case because they seem to tick every box, and look perfect to combo with the Zx5 long irons. One of my issues with the Mizuno’s is that while I love the look of the tours, I hate the rest of the line when it comes to looks.

My concern with ZX7 from the online reviews is it’s relatively low spin. I hope i can get at least 6000+ spin for 7i. We will see.

I always add 1k-1.5k spin going from mats to outdoors. Any irons I've spun at 6500+ off mats balloon and spin at around 8k outdoors. Don't trust mat spin.

Srixons seem to always be a little lower spinning compared to other players irons. Can't ignore the fact that there is a 1-2 difference is loft compared to "typical" players lofts. I have a good amount of speed and the tendency to get steep every once in a while, so I know the v sole could help me out with that. I have hit the 765's on a course once and really enjoyed those.

On a different note, I am very confused as to why there isn't more reviews from the larger YouTube channels on the X forged CB. Almost all of them have the UT reviews but only smaller channels (other than TXG) have the CB. I am very eager to hear more about those as well as the 2021 apex line. I really hope the 2021 apex pro line does not have the cup face, as when I hit the 19 apex compared to 718 ap2 I was not a fan of the dispersion I saw front to back.

I had the same confusion, up until I bought a CB 21 iron and tried on my own. Simply out, Callaway essentially killed the X-forged line by moving away from the one piece design. The feel is not as solid plus it looks awful. I am sad to say this as a long time x-forged user.

I've seen this in a few online reviews but not my experience at all.

Spin numbers were identical with a 921 Tour and ZX7 in my fitting.

ZX7 should have spun a bit lower given the stronger lofts but I did not see this at all.

I agree 100%. I hit the p7mc, p770 and the x forged CB 21 today.  The clear winner for me was the CB 21.  It felt the most solid of the three.

Problem is for someone sensitive to offset the CB21 are a complete non starter. IMO these brands are putting way too much in this bracket of club. Same with the 921 tour to be honest. Taylormade at least toned it down with the MC.

From a looks perspective I 100% agree. The first thing I thought when I grabbed the X Forged CB was "man what a great looking club, but why with the offset."

I went from AP2 to Honma to Srixon Z785 and do not see myself turning back from Srixon.  The more I continue looking at pics of the ZX7's I am really excited and already plan to purchase a new set 5-PW w/ Modus3 Tour 105R, hard stepped.  The Honmas were great but didn't feel I had the control, they were so hot off the face but at my level didnt have the feel control I found in the Srixon.  The T100S look good but its just stronger lofts, no other adjustments.  If you didnt like Srixon, I would try Honma and then Mizuno.  I also found the Mizuno difficult for me to feel, but again I am a high handicap player and have no issue playing the Z785's.   They also offer great options without uncharges.

I haven't hit the newest (like the brand new Callaway or the Cobra MiM's) but all the others I have hit.

In the end FOR MY SWING it ended up  being between the T100s bent weak and the i210(For major OEM brands).

For me to even include the Titleist irons says something.  I have no brand LOAYALTY but do have brand DISLOYALTY to Titleist.   In the end I am comparing the SUB 70 and the i210.  The Sub 70 eked out win against the T100s to find a spot in the top 2.

In the end I play what is best, but if all else works the same or just as well, then I go to feel as a factor and the Sub70 and i210 both felt better to me than the T100s.

Srixon ZX7 are definitely at the top of my list. Every time I stray from Srixon, I inevitably find my way back. The V sole just works in any conditions, which is easy to forget when conditions are ideal. Add in the fact that they offer several no-upcharge shaft and grip options, and they are definitely my top choice at this point.

I recently went to CC to try basically everything that is out there, all were tested with a PX LZ shaft (current gamer in Srixon 765)...a couple reactions:

1) 921 Tour came out on top for me - feel, strike consistency / dispersion, spin, trajectory were all on point - started striking these well pretty much right out of the gate

2) Titleist T100 was a surprise for me and a close second to the 921s...nothing bad to say, Mizunos were just a touch better across the board; ball speeds in line with 921T

3) X Forged CB took me a little time to warm up to, but started to get good results once I got comfortable with them...a little less consistent in strike quality and a little less ball speed on good strikes...likely just a feel thing for me

4) I wanted to love the TM line-up (p770 / p7mc combo) but couldn't get along with them...was just super inconsistent for me and even my good strikes didn't feel as good as the 921T

One caveat to all of this - I didn't get to try the ZX7's.  I am going back to CC once they get a set in and will likely put them up against the 921T and T100.

One way to look for what is the best  is to count how many “equipment free agents” play a certain iron. Historically speaking, quite a few free agents play player irons from Mizuno (jpx tour and MP) and Srixon (745, 785 etc), but very few play Callaway, Cobra, or Taylormade irons.  If this trend continues for 20-21 irons, it would be good indication about what is the best out there.

Honestly I'm not sure I would base too much off of what a handful of tour free agents use when it comes to finding clubs for yourself. It's not a bad place to start I guess but disregarding certain brands based of a specific grouping of tour players feels like not the best idea. Although it is pretty interesting to see how it changes year to year.

Agreed. The best for “tour players” or “other people” may not be the best for you. As a matter of fact I tried new irons often but always go back to Callaway irons, which perform the best for me even though as I note, no free agents pros play.
