The 5 hour round

Recommended Posts

Two weeks in a row and I have had the luck to get behind large groups, that could care less how long they take to play. Today it was the get drunk and play golf group. They were playing best ball and getting smashed. The drunker they got, the worse they played. Yeah, I called the marshal and complained, then they started picking up the pace. As I was leaving one of them flipped me off, so I confronted him, and he said he confused me with someone else, sure he did. The course said they were having a hard time getting carts for players, so the marshal was busy. Then after my call I guess he had a talk with them, as they started to pick it up. This group had their own beer cart girl, and she had hard liquor in the cooler as well.

What I find annoying is the lack of courtesy displayed by some people. They know there are people behind them, but they just don't care and take their own sweet time.    In addition to Covid

I guess it is the luck of playing at this course? I am not a "big" dude, except gut wise. Just wanted some clarification. I am going to be taking a break anyways as the weather is changing to worse.

Pandemic golf flat out sucks. I managed to play 5 holes in the past 2 weeks. Every course in town is booked solid and I typically walk on as a single so my options are limited to twilight if that. I thought things would be a bit better on Black Friday but they weren't. I can't wait until the courses aren't filled with newbies that have nothing better to do.

Plenty of 5 hour rounds here in LA county where I live.  It's actually the norm especially the weekends.  It's worse now since the pandemic and everyone wants to golf.  The course I played was Rancho Park(muni) in West LA and those that live in LA county know what I'm talking about.  Tee sheets are always filled to the max even weekdays and you pretty much have to make tee times 2 weeks in advance in order to get a decent time.  One round almost took us 6 hours once.  They only had 5 minute gaps between groups which is bs.  We were waiting on average 10 minutes between shots.  Every par 3 was backed up 3 groups waiting.  Started at 12 finished close to 6.  One of the most frustrating rounds in my life.  I've never played that course since and don't plan on doing so.

The part that is the most frustrating, is the rhythm I am trying to establish, I just can't find one when waiting that long. On the holes where they moved halfway decent really helped, but the long waits on most holes really threw the game. The weather looks really bad for sometime and I am sure that was the reason for the big crowd.

Public golf will never solve the 5 hour round. Nor do they really want to, yes they could enforce it more but they risk upsetting people at a time when most public golf courses are failing (forget about Covid it's a unique circumstance...prior to Covid courses were really struggling and they will again once there's a vaccine).

Would they rather someone who plays in 3:45 or someone who play in 4:45 but buys 12 beers as a foursome, rents a cart, goes to the range etc...

The slovenly unwashed masses that play in 5 hours tend to spend a lot more money than the fast golfers. At least IMO. Not everyone can be like MtlJeff, i buy 10 beers, harass the cart girls, crap in the bunkers, and still play in 3:15. But i am unique

You are Canadien. You don't crap in the bunkers. 😉

One of the reasons I just joined a local club was to reduce costs, but it also doesn't seem to get very busy. I was first out this morning, then a pair tees off when I was on 4, then on 6 I noticed someone teeing off on 8 and thought that was genius. 8 tees off the back of the clubhouse, so you can play 8,9 then the tee for 1 is on the other side.

By teeing off on 8 if someone is on 1, you put at least 3 holes between you (8 and 9 are the longest) and don't have to wait for them to clear 1 to start.

But so far I have yet to wait to play. It's awesome. I just need my own cart and I'm dialed (the club only has 3 working carts currently).

Oh man, Rancho is the worst of all the munis but they're all unbearable. I actually do quite like the layout of the Griffith Park courses but man, I just can't even deal.

Really the only courses nearby I'm confident we can be done in around 4 hours are like Rustic and Angeles National.

Bunkers??  I thought that they were called "cat boxes" in Quebec?

I love Rustic as well and Angeles, but man, ever since the pandemic the green fees have sky rocketed so those courses are a treat for me to play on.  Have you played Moorpark CC?  I'm supposed to play there next week with my parents.  One of my favorite places to play in all of SoCal besides Aviara down in SD.

AN's always been on the pricier side but $60 deals on GolfNow pop up every so often. Hadn't noticed Rustic being more lately but I haven't played it in a couple months. (My profile photo is actually from the last time I played it in like September - walking up #7 I think!)

And nah, haven't played Moorpark. Only other courses I've done up that way are Tierra Rejada and Los Robles. Sounds like one to check out!

I've played Tierra and Rejada and Los Robles as well.  I do enjoy both lay outs as well.  Our high school golf team would have some of our matches over at LR.  Moorpark has 27 holes so there's more options there.  You should def check it out sometime.

You might know a buddy of mine - pretty sure he's mentioned LR being his high school course.

Now I want to go out and play all those courses in those pictures, lol.  I played all of them except Goose Creek.  Angeles being the hardest, Oak Quarry being a close second and Coyote Hills third IMO.  How does Goose Creek play?  I'm going to have to make a trip out there soon.  Black Gold another good one to play out in Yorba Linda as well.
