Man, do I miss Oak Quarry.  And that shot of 14 doesn't really do it justice.  One of the most intimidating par 3's I've ever played.  Live in TX now and its great but there is absolutely no comparison in the quality of public golf between CA and TX.  Sadly.

BUT - to the OP's point, if I suspect I'm going to have a 5 hr round I just turn it into the 2.5 hr 9 holer and leave.  I just don't have the patience for that anymore.  And its not just the time.  I find people who can't play in less than 5 hrs are more likely to have no regard for walking on your line on the green, not repairing pitch marks. moving around during your swing on tee boxes or worse, standing like 8 ft directly behind you on a tee box.  That kind of stuff.  Yeah I know, get off my lawn and all that.

In addition to Covid, there seems to be a pandemic of discourtesy.

To quote an old friend; "I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it".

Pandemic golf flat out sucks. I managed to play 5 holes in the past 2 weeks. Every course in town is booked solid and I typically walk on as a single so my options are limited to twilight if that. I thought things would be a bit better on Black Friday but they weren't. I can't wait until the courses aren't filled with newbies that have nothing better to do.

im in the same boat as you almost. i tend to always play/sign up, as a single. thankfully there are a few courses where i live where i know i can walk in and get a tee time with no worry.  biggest thing i learned was that the golfnow app has been amazing to book times with. sure you may get paired up with randoms, but i enjoy meeting new people in that capacity.

Played in the two-day November championship of the local amateur circuit. Total players were down due to COVID and the projected cold weather. Only 40 or so rather than 100+. And, due to low numbers, other groups waiting to tee off in late morning.

The course has several holes with long narrow greens (35 + yards deep). Several greens had rolling contours to add challenge to fairly flat course. Round 1 was OK - rain softened the slalom greens - but Round 2 was a *^# Seinfeld episode. It was 50*F and chilly from the Round 1 rains.

First of all, a course ranger came by every couple of holes yelling at us to "hurry up."    On one hole, we got yelled at for having a "hole open" ahead of us. Well, it wasn't open. The group ahead were off in the rocks looking for two tee shots.

The pins were all a pain - no hard, mid, easy mix. Turns out a high-dollar scramble was the PM event, the pins were set for them, not us. Our foursome had seven four-putts amongst us. Not having time to read the contours as the winds dried the greens out definitely didn't help.

On a two-hole stretch, a strong wind was blowing left to right. The right rough on both had been brushhogged the prior week, and two feet off the fairway could be a lost ball. And if you found it, chances are you took an unplayable lie if you had bent-over prairie grass behind.

The final two holes we played into a 40 MPH headwind. Final hole a 365-yd. par 4, I hit a low driver to about 170 out, and followed up with a low 4H. Ball hit on front of green, but wind blew it back to fringe. I was 12 feet from cup. Wind was affecting putts, so I made sure I hit it firmly. Putt missed 2 inches to left, coming to rest 6" past the cup... then crept to 8"... then it plunged down a swale 40 feet past the cup. One of those 4-putts which I previewed.

Despite the drama, we finished in 4:50!

One good thing. Lots of the players turned in their scorecards and left without eating the buffet lunch. Plenty of food for those who stayed.

The part that is the most frustrating, is the rhythm I am trying to establish, I just can't find one when waiting that long. On the holes where they moved halfway decent really helped, but the long waits on most holes really threw the game. The weather looks really bad for sometime and I am sure that was the reason for the big crowd.

I have found that to be a bit of an issue with my game as well. When I have to wait I think I get too into my own head and it affects my play. Playing as a single oftentimes doesn't help, when I'm by myself between groups I tend to feel rushed.

I'm in Ohio right now. Ten inches of snow.....I'd gladly take a five hour round right now. Can't wait to get to sunny Cal.

My wife is from the Chilicothe area.  She moved out here 12 years ago so we could start our lives together.  She always tells me she loves it here especially the liberal culture and weather.  I've been to Ohio a few times but November was the worst.  Snow season wasn't even in full effect but there was a thin later outside and it was in the 20's in the early mornings.  I didn't bring enough winter clothing and froze my a** off the entire trip.  Of course I'm a wuss when it comes to cold weather in general since I'm born and raised here in SoCal.

Oak Quarry was on my "to play" list the next time I got back to Palm Springs.  Unfortunately, that has been shelved for at least a year since travel to the States from Canada isn't happening right now.

Here I am freezing my butt off, and I am sure So Cal is in the 70's!

Weather is always nice here year round.  It's too bad our dry winters bring wild fires here.  Newsome seems to be waffling on stay at home orders as well.  I'm all for wearing masks and following social distancing rules out in public but I got an email yesterday saying that LA County city golf courses are only allowing golfers from the same household to play together per group.  😑

The next time someone says "but I can't justify the cost of a private club", remember this. My longest round this season, 4 hours and 20 minutes. And that was one round. The rest were 4 hours or less.

I usually walk 9 in 1.5hrs, sometimes 1.25hrs. Play 18 with a cart in 3.5hrs max. If it takes more then 2hrs per 9, which it sometimes does here, I just call it a day and play the next day.

I've played 18 in a cart with the course wide open in 2 hours 10 mins before, lol

Yeah, I think the quickest I've walked 18 on my home course was 2 hours and 35 minutes. A lot of my rounds are in the 3 hour window. Compare that to my previous club which was semi-private. If I had a 4 hour round there it was considered fast.

Now I want to go out and play all those courses in those pictures, lol.  I played all of them except Goose Creek.  Angeles being the hardest, Oak Quarry being a close second and Coyote Hills third IMO.  How does Goose Creek play?  I'm going to have to make a trip out there soon.  Black Gold another good one to play out in Yorba Linda as well.

Goose has the best 18th hole in SoCal that is not Riv.

Played a few weeks ago at one of the only courses open in the area. Lots of golfers there as everyone was trying to get a round in before a big snowstorm later in the week.  Place was so packed that even with a tee time I didn't get out until 45 mins after my original tee time. Marshalls were just pushing people out everywhere - in between other groups, etc.  And to make matters worse there were a lot of older people waiting around for carts as the younger golfers took carts earlier in the day.  Several fights almost broke out (not kidding) when some older gentleman asked if the younger guys could exchange their carts and walk instead. The round was muddy, messy and it took over 5 1/2 hours to play which was awful but fortunately I played with a good group and we had fun.  Horrible waits on every shot made it difficult but I'd rather be golfing than sitting at home, although my blood pressure must have spike that day.  You have to expect longer rounds on the weekend but this year has been extra tough for a lot of reasons. Again just glad I can play golf at all.

As others have said Private courses are really the best way to avoid this, however not everyone has access to this depending on the region and costs associated (In Montreal private clubs are very affordable)

Public golf will never solve the 5 hour round. Nor do they really want to, yes they could enforce it more but they risk upsetting people at a time when most public golf courses are failing (forget about Covid it's a unique circumstance...prior to Covid courses were really struggling and they will again once there's a vaccine).

Would they rather someone who plays in 3:45 or someone who play in 4:45 but buys 12 beers as a foursome, rents a cart, goes to the range etc...

The slovenly unwashed masses that play in 5 hours tend to spend a lot more money than the fast golfers. At least IMO. Not everyone can be like MtlJeff, i buy 10 beers, harass the cart girls, crap in the bunkers, and still play in 3:15. But i am unique

I used to have this mindset.....that private courses were the answer.  However, my private club is jammed up every day of the week.  There's always some event going on (often non-member events)....so unless you book a week and a half out, you're not getting on.  Even then, you're lucky to get an 11:30 tee time and you're destined to be behind a bunch of fools who take 5 hours to play.  It's actually easier for me to get onto local public courses, and it has gotten to the point where I'm dumping my membership at the end of the year.  Maybe when the impacts of COVID abate, thing's will get back to normal.  Anyone else experiencing this at a private club??

One contributor to five-hour rounds can be strange course routing. People can get lost!

At Sunset Hills CC in Edwardsville, IL, it's hard to find the No. 3 tee. The scorecard routing sketch is inaccurate, and non-regulars can get lost trying to find it.

Another course in the area, Stonebridge, closed down several year ago. On the back nine, you had to go 400 yards through winding cart paths to get from #12 green to #13 tee (I think these were the hole numbers). The two holes both ran east to west, parallel to each other, with about 100 yards of trees and scrub between the fairways.

It's like 10 through 12 and 13 through 18 had different architects, and nobody discovered the oopsie until opening day.

Totally agree regarding private club membership.

Even on the weekends, with the tee sheet packed at 8-minute intervals, anything longer than 2 hours for 9 holes is unacceptable.

On weekday mornings, I can play 18 holes (walking) in less than 3 hours.

I joined a private club end of 2019 in NJ. Best decision I’ve made. I don’t think I could ever go back to 5 hour rounds and overpaying for terrible conditions. Covid has every public course booked solid every day of the week all day long. It would be hard to play at all if I wasn’t a member somewhere.

Which?

And you were playing as a fivesome why, again?

Because 4 would not have been a fivesome? If a group of 5 people are playing together, it is generally called a fivesome. At least that's what I've been told, but I'm no expert.

It was originally 2 groups of 4 and 3 bailed due to conflicts. The clubhouse said to go ahead. There was a pair that caught up around 15 that we let play through.

So the course wasn’t busy anyway.. why on earth play as a 5? Play as a 3 and a 2 and get round quicker... jeez
