i literally haven't hit driver in a year due to 2020 weirdness but will finally get to next week. could probably come up with an honest number in a month from now...

 

stock/90% PW at sea level is around 140y.

Sometimes I see “purposely obtuse” or “intentionally obtuse” - those are both acceptable IMO

Monte, what I notice playing finesse shots is I have a tendency to pull it or hook it left. I suspect it’s because I give up on rotation with my lower body but I’m not for sure if that’s the reason. 
 

do you see a common theme from players that pull/hook their off-speed shots?

That’s usually a backswing too long.

This hits a bit too close to home for me.  I'm a 285+ in the air under normal conditions and I'm now trying to hit my Pw 140+ for absolutely no good reason.  Talk about being obtuse.  Honest to goodness, if I had a left arm parallel, 115y Pw shot, I'd be a plus 'cap.

practice hitting wedges into a stiff headwind. imho.

I understand.  The two big reasons that kept me off the tour....attempting 115 yard LW’s with a balata ball.  No go to driver shot when I wasn’t swinging well.  Still struggle with number 2.

As I've gotten older (and fatter) I've reduced my backswing with most shots, especially wedges and short irons. Very JB Holmes-like. To me it's worth trading 5 yards for better center-face contact.

Hitting wedges to the half yard is only needed by those who can't make a 3 footer.

Here's a standard "high" GW for me. Shot played about 102. 

 

 

and this is a flighted shot into a 15mph wind. Playing about 105. Same club, different shot.

 

 

Is that something that you teach, Monte? Two different shots -- or even three -- with the same wedge? Or do you want your players just hitting one basic shot all the time with each wedge?

 

Not sure if this helps the thread, but I'm SHORT off the tee (245 total distance) and my game inside 170 (and my reliable, yet short tee ball) is what allows me to play to a tournament +2 when I'm healthy. 
 

It's funny, Monte, but when I was younger and more fit, I used to hit the ball much, much farther. My wedge play was always quite good because my move results in a low shot, but I, too, used to try to hit full LW too frequently to too many bad pins. Nothing wrong with hitting a nearly full lob wedge to a front pin when you want to throw the ball behind the pin and spin it back to the hole, But even that can be risky and you have to be certain of the conditions and how much the ball is going to spin in order to do it.

My scoring today is as good or better as it ever has been even though I am 30 to 40 yard shorter off the tee. And much of that is my improved wedge play (all the things you mention) and my greatly improved putting.

This is not an irritating question at all.

 

270 / 125 - tops, often a bit less with shorter swings. 

 

I've always really enjoyed hitting specific distances with multiple clubs, and will often use a "longer" club for a shorter distance - especially in the 8i-SW range.

 

I can't remember the last time I took a full cut with my LW (other than forced lob shots over an obstacle). I love partial swing wedge shots. It often means I have a decent shot at birdie coming up.
